    Dec. 04, 2017

Leo Higgins (b.1951) Winter Trees (2005)

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Leo Higgins (b.1951) Winter Trees (2005) unique bronze on stone base signed and dated 2005 h:53  w:32 d:28 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist Leo Higgins has produced a series of work based on the theme of 'Winter Tree'. This piece is a maquette for the large version of which was installed in Grafton Street for a period of six months in 2007. The Grafton Street sculpture installation was composed of white patinated bronze trees on black granite, each three metres high, installed by Dublin City Council and The Solomon Gallery. Inspiration for the series derived from an early morning journey to Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Leo Higgins describes it as "one of those bleak, frosty mornings unique to rural Ireland" Waiting at 6 am, he was struck by the bleak beauty of a bare tree frosted white in the cold morning. In the following weeks he produced his first sculpture in the series of Winter Tree for exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2005.

RIVERRUN height 81cm.; 32in. signed with initials bronze NOTE The present work is unique. Riverrun is the first and last word of James Joyce's final novel, Finnegan's Wake, which famously begins, 'Riverrun past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs...'. It was only published in 1939 after he had worked on it for 17 years and the sense of movement generated by the opening line is reflected by the smooth elegant forms of the present work. Higgins established the CAST foundry in Dublin in 1988 and since then has become particularly well known for his versatile casting technique working with artists such as John Behan, Melanie le Brocquy, Imogen Stuart, and Sonja Landweer amongst many others.
