        Mar. 24, 2018

BRONZE GROUP, 'DOLLARD DES ORMEAUX,' AFTER LOUIS-PHILIPPE HEBERT (1850-1917)

        Est: $800 - $1,200

BRONZE GROUP, 'DOLLARD DES ORMEAUX,' AFTER LOUIS-PHILIPPE HEBERT (1850-1917) Adam Dollard des Ormeaux (1635-1660) is an iconic figure in the history of Canada. At 23, he emigrated from France to “New France” and by 1658 was appointed the Commander of the Garrison at Ville-Marie (now Montreal). In the spring of 1660, he led a group of 17 young French men to the Ottawa River to attack the Iroquois. They were outnumbered, and he and all of his companions were killed at the Battle of Long Sault. Most historians agree that Dollard set out to conduct an ambush against the Iroquois in order to delay (or avoid altogether) their imminent attack on Ville-Marie. For these reasons, Dollard is regarded as a hero of New France. Louis-Philippe Hebert was a Canadian sculptor who worked in bronze, wood and terracotta. He apprenticed in Paris and exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Francais de Paris for the Expositions Universelles, and received a bronze medal in 1889 and a silver medal in 1990. He was made a Chevalier of France’s Legion of Honor in 1901. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and was awarded the Medal of Confederation in 1894. The Prix Philippe-Hebert, named in his honor, has been given to an artist of outstanding ability and stature in Quebec since 1971, h: (to tip of sword) 36 x w: 19 x d: 12 in. Literature: E. Benezit, Dictionnaire critique et documentaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, 1999, vol. 6, p. 834.

Porter (general eds.), A History of Art in Quebec, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Quebec, 2004, page 89.Daniel Drouin, et alia, Louis-Philippe Hébert, Musée du Québec et Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, 2001, pages 138-141, page 357 for Pêcheur à la Nigogue (collection of the Musée du Québec), reproduced as Fig. 355, page 356 for a handwritten agreement between Wickham and Hébert, reproduced as Fig. 350 and page 141 for the large version of Pêcheur à la Nigogue, in situ, reproduced. The entry for Louis-Philippe Hébert (1850-1917) in a publication of select works from the collection of the Musée du Québec describes the sculptor in this way: "Louis-Philippe Hébert was an impassioned artist, a hard worker and beyond doubt the most skilled Canadian sculptor of his time. He often went to Paris and avidly drank in it's art and culture. He absorbed the refinement, taste for balance and sensitivity to the human body of great French sculpture."This high opinion of Hébert was shared by Patrick Martin Wickham, an insurance executive, and mayor of St. Lambert. A friendship developed between the two men; Wickham is reputed to have served as the model for Hébert's sculpture of Dollard des Ormeaux.  Wickham asked Hébert if he would make smaller versions of select sculptures that the artist had provided as decoration for the niches of the National Assembly Buildings in Quebec City, whose facade was meant to be “a pantheon” of historic Quebecers. The large-scale figure of first nations subjects were produced ca. 1889 “pour rendre hommage aux premier habitant du pays.” An agreement was struck that committed Hébert to casting six small bronzes of Pêcheur à la Nigogue and Les Algonquins. This lot is one of those original six furnished by Hébert to his patron-friend. Despite the cordial relationship between Louis-Philippe Hébert and Wickham, the details of their business transactions were meticulously recorded by the artist and by the Wickham family and various contracts between them are still in the possession of Wickham's descendants.Estimate: $10,000–15,000

It is also interesting to note the contrast in his depiction of male and female subjects. Drouin notes: "Si l'homme est souvent representé en chasseur ou en guerrier à l'affut, la femme emprunte les traits d'une séductrice ou d'une abandonnée, comme...Coeur qui Chante."Insurance Executive Patrick Martin Wickham was an early patron of Louis-Philippe Hébert. He also served as Mayor of St. Lambert, Quebec for several terms at the turn of the century. A cordial relationship arose between Louis-Philippe Hébert and Wickham over the years, and the details of their business transactions were meticulously recorded by the artist and by the Wickham family. Wickham approached the artist with a special request that Hébert make small replicas of a number of works which graced the National Assembly Buildings in Quebec City, a request embraced by the artist. At least seven small statues were created, including Coeur qui Chante, with three to six copies of each, all cast at the renowned R. Hohwiller Foundry in Paris.
