        George Harvey (1800 - 1878) Catskills NY

        Est: $7,000 - $9,000

George Harvey (New York, Massachusetts / England, Canada 1800 - 1878) Landscape painting of Catskills New York. Man fishing near a lake with mountains in the background. Map of where the scene is attached verso. Oil/Canvas. Sight Size: 7.75 x 9.5 in. Overall Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. In 1828, Harvey submitted two picturesque* English scene paintings and a floral still life to the National Academy of Design* for exhibition. He listed his address as Brooklyn and on the works described the English scenes as "made from a Sketch Taken in 1819;" and the still life as "A Vase of Flowers Copied from Nature." (Dearinger) He was almost immediately elected to the Academy for membership, which indicates that although he was a relative newcomer to New York City, he had already gained widespread respect as a painter. y 1829, Harvey had moved to Boston, but he contributed to the National Academy exhibition of that year, but did not participate again until 1837, when he was living at Hastings-on-Hudson, New York and had a studio in the New York University Building. When settled at Hastings-on-Hudson, he began his "American Scenery" series, for which he remains most known. Completed in 1840 and edited by Washington Irving, the project had forty watercolors that he intended to have engraved* in England and widely circulated by subscriptions. However, the cost was enormous, he could not get necessary funding; and only 250 copies with four views sold. (The New York Historical Society has about 20 of the unpublished watercolors intended for engraving in England. ) This project meant that Harvey spent much time away from the United States in England and diminished people's knowledge of him in America. Harvey Exhibited at National Academy exhibitions of 1840, 1842, 1846 and 1847.

PROVENANCE Victor Spark, New York Private Collection, New England, circa 1946 (acquired from the above) By descent to the present owner EXHIBITED New York, Old Print Shop, before 1943 New York, The New-York Historical Society, March-April 1948 Washington, D.C., The Corcoran Gallery of Art, American Processional, July-December 1950 Rochester, New York, The Memorial Art Gallery, Rediscovered Painters of Upstate New York, before 1953 Rochester, New York, The Memorial Art Gallery, The Erie Canal: Thruway of Yesterday, October-December 1953 (as Afternoon-Dead Calm) Rochester, New York, The Memorial Art Gallery, The Genessee Country, January-February 1976, illustrated (as Late Afternoon-Calm on the Erie Canal) LITERATURE AND REFERENCES "The Home Forum," The Christian Science Monitor, December 6, 1943, p. 12, illustrated Brooklyn Museum Bulletin, vol. 9, 1948, pp. 2-3, illustrated American Heritage Magazine, 1963, illustrated (as Late Afternoon-Calm on the Erie Canal) CATALOGUE NOTE "George Harvey was born in England. Soon after his arrival in New York in 1820, he set out for the 'remote wilds of the New World,' hunting and trapping, writing poetry and prose, and, what is more important, sketching and painting. "By 1828 he was elected an Associate National Academician, indicating that his standing among his peers was considerable before he was thirty. In 1829 he moved to Boston where he was best known for his miniature portraits. After a trip to England in 1833, he settled in Hastings-on-Hudson, near his friend Washington Irving. "He now began work on a major project which he was destined never to see completed, This was to be a series of engravings after his forty watercolors of American Scenes, in which the emphasis is on the intangible factor of 'atmosphere.' The plan called for the engraving of these and their sale in England and America, but it proved to be economically impractical. The majority of the watercolors are in the collections of The New-York Historical Society, New York. "Harvey is not, properly speaking, part of the Hudson River School but he was a contemporary of its leaders and was one more force in awakening Americans to the beauty with which nature had endowed their environment" (Agnes Halsey Jones, Hudson River School, Geneva, New York, 1968, p. 138) A watercolor of the same subject titled A Sultry Calm: Pitsford [sic] on the Erie Canal is in the collection of the New York State Historical Association, Cooperstown, New York.

GEORGE HARVEY 1800-1878 FIGURES IN THE GARDEN OF BUCKSKIN HALL, CHALK LANE, COCKFOSTERS; A CARRIAGE BY THE GATES OF EAGLE HALL, SOUTHGATE HIGH STREET two, both signed, one l.c.: G.Harvey and the other l.l.: G Harvey and inscribed on part of an old label attached to the backboard: The Birth Place of LEIGH HUNT watercolour over pencil, one heightened with touches of white Quantity: 2 CATALOGUE NOTE One of the watercolours included in the present lot depicts a carriage by the gates of Eagle Hall,Southgate High Street. The building was destroyed during World War II and replaced by the Southgate Reform Synagogue. Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) who was born there is commemorated nearby in Leigh Hunt Drive next to Southgate College. The house and garden depicted in the other watercolour is most likely part of the Dacre Lodge Estate in Cockfosters. It was formerly known as Buckskin Hall and destroyed by fire in 1895. It was rebuilt, but later demolished in 1971. The church to the rear is Christ Church prior to its enlargement in 1898 and the view has been taken from the west side of Chalk Lane, looking south. George Harvey was born in Tottenham and trained in England. He travelled to New York in 1820 and spent the next thirty years in America, except for a few trips back to England and the Continent. During his time in America he became an Associate of the National Academy of Design and enjoyed the patronage of the eminent collector, Moses Grinnell. He also became a close friend of Washingon Irving and helped to design Sunnyside, Irving's Tarrytown residence. He drew and painted landscapes in Ohio, Michigan, on the Eerie Canal, in Canada, at Newport and in other places from Maine to Virginia. In the 1830's he built a home near Hastings-on-Hudson and began a long pictorial study of the weather and seasonal changes in the Hudson River valley. He finally sold the property in 1846 and little is known about the artists life after 1850, although his letters after that date were all written from London.
