      Jul. 12, 2022

      Imprimerie Camis. ca. 1900.

      Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ARTIST: CARL HAP (Karl Happel, 1819-1914) SIZE: 37 3/4 x 27 1/2 in./96 x 69.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. Camis, Paris DESCRIPTION: Hap conjures up a veritable poster lover’s dream for the Camis printers. Surrounding the central painter are various muses, from angels to monsters, soldiers to mothers, and various Parisian characters. These are presumably the fodder for the finalized lithographs, examples of which are provided along the top. It’s truly a hit list of the greatest posters and brands of the era: Chocolat Menier, Maggi, Liebig, Peugeot, and Absinthe Cusenier rank among the group. Camis further endorses their brand with a list of clients along the left and right sides. Metallic silver at top and bottom add another level of godliness to this ethereal design. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Posters on Posters)

ARTIST: CARL HAP (Karl Happel, 1819-1914) SIZE: 31 1/8 x 47 3/4 in./79.2 x 121.2 cm PRINTER: Affiches Camis, Paris DESCRIPTION: "Who wants love?" That's the simple question posed by this one-act revue by Léon Xanrof and Léon Garnier. No plot exists that we've found, but we imagine a triumphant singsongy story about overcoming the triumphs of war and love. Xanrof—born Léon Alfred Forneau—was a French humorist, music-hall artist, playwright, and songwriter. Most notably, Yvette Guilbert took her first steps to stardom by singing his songs at the Chat Noir. (Art Nouveau; Music; Cabaret)

      Dec. 15, 2010

CARL HAP (KARL HAPPEL 1819-1914). GRAND CHERRY-BRANDY COINTREAU. 1897. 49x38 inches, 126x96 cm. Camis, Paris.

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

CARL HAP (KARL HAPPEL 1819-1914) GRAND CHERRY-BRANDY COINTREAU. 1897. 49 3/4x38 inches, 126x96 1/2 cm. Camis, Paris. Condition B+ / B: minor repaired tears in margins; creases, foxing and time staining in margins and image. Framed. Hap was an academic German painter who also worked as a magazine illustrator. His illustration style was dramatically different than his paintings, and his few posters reflect a caricature style similar to Albert Guillaume who also worked for the Camis printer. Here Hap self-referentially includes a copy of the French magazine Fin-De-Siècle for which he worked. The image itself is a delightfully immoral scene of an aristocratic man under the double influence of the Cherry Brandy and the sensuous woman. Clearly no stranger to such a situation, she is taking advantage of her lover's intoxication and reaching for his wallet! Cointreau was founded in 1849 and is still famous around the world for its square bottle. The company also produced other aperitifs such as Cherry Brandy. Cointreau p. 30, DFP-II 461, Meisterplakate 116.
