Two of the cases show young children wearing identical plaids, each beautifully tinted in delicate red and in the same elegant pose; these both with Gurney's 707 Broadway address stamped on the mat. The third apparently depicting the statesman Dayton, with the Gurney and Fredericks 349 Broadway address on the mat. Each in their brass mats and preservers; in leather cases. 1850s

        Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) TWO SISTERS c.1853. A half-plate, hand-coloured daguerreotype portrait, with decorative gilt mat, photographers stamp recto, housed in a side-hinged, push-button, maroon leather case, embossed with floral design. These children are clearly from the higher stratum of American Society. Gurney's focussed portrait composition, with the two inquisitive girls encapsulated by the blackness of the drop behind them, and with the swirling sumptuous carpet below, accentuating their pantaloons, is a truly inspired piece of American daguerreotypist portraiture.

A beautifully detailed and nuanced portrait with expert hand-tinting. Two women are seated with two young girls and an infant, perhaps three generations of women in a family.

Condition: Tarnish with some spotting, case worn and abraded at edges, cover missing, not examined out of case. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. To have a daguerreotype signed by the operator who made the portrait is very unusual. The name inscribed in the plate may be that of James Forbes, who worked for Gurney at his New York studio around 1855.
