New York City, ca. 1850s, in full case under preserver and behind a brass matt stamped J. GURNEY and 349 BROADWAY. This lightly tinted portrait by pioneer American photographer Jeremiah Gurney is a study in cutting-edge male fashion before the Civil War. The darkly handsome subject wears a close-fitting frock coat over a checkered vest and exudes a confidence befitting New York's affluent of the day.
