EDOUARD GURK (Vienna 1801-1841 Jerusalem) An Outdoor Theatrical Presentation for the Vienna Rothschild Family. Watercolor and gouache on cream wove paper. 280x400 mm; 11x15 3/4 inches. Provenance: Baron Alfons de Rothschild, Vienna; thence to his widow, Baroness Clarice de Rothschild, Vienna; gifted to Eric Stiebel, Vienna; private collection, New York; private collection, Santa Fe. Gurk was an Austrian landscape painter and printmaker, who worked for the Habsburg Court under Emperors Francis I and Ferdinand I. In 1840, he traveled to the Middle East with the Austrian fleet, by invitation of Rear Admiral Francesco Bandiera. Disembarking at Beirut, he continued down the coast, documenting the exploits of Archduke Friedrich, who had recently been awarded the Military Order of Maria Theresa. However, when Gurk arrived in Jerusalem, already ill from the voyage, he came down with typhoid fever and died just three days later.

Gurk, Eduard: Blick auf die Kirche St. Jakob in Penzing in Wien

Blick auf die Kirche St. Jakob in Penzing in Wien, vom gräflich Schladen'schen Garten. Aquarell mit Deckfarben auf Velin, verso in Bleistift "Blick auf Karlsbad". 20,6 x 25,3 cm. Signiert und datiert "Eduard Gurk. fec. 1828". Die Ansicht zeigt die Pfarrkirche St. Jakob in Penzing in Wien von Südosten noch mit dem Zwiebelturm, der im 2. Weltkrieg zerstört wurde. Der die Kirche umgebende Friedhof galt im Biedermeier als einer der schönsten in der Umgebung Wiens und besteht heute nicht mehr. Bei der im Vordergrund befindlichen Gartenanlage dürfte es sich um den englischen Garten des königlich preußischen Gesandten Friedrich Heinrich Leopold Graf von Schladen handeln, der im franziszeischen Katasterplan von 1819 als solcher verzeichnet ist. Eduard Gurk wohnte seit 1819 unweit von diesem Park im Hause seines Vaters in Penzing Nr. 178, jetzt Linzerstrasse 26.
