    Oil on canvas Signed in the lower right corner (partially cut). On the back is the label of the Board for the Seizure and Protection of Artistic Heritage, inventory number: 967; provenance: Romanones/4 Jean Adrien Guignet was a French painter specializing in oriental themes and dramatic landscapes, influenced by the painters Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860) and Salvator Rosa (1615-1673). The latter enjoyed great popularity during the 19th century, being considered as a precursor of the romantic painters. His life was romanticized in various literary works (such as the 1823 "Life and Times of Salvatore Rosa" by Lady Morgan) and Guignet, in addition to taking many of his pictorial characteristics, he included it as a narrative element in some of them. The most important was undoubtedly “Salvator Rosa among the bandits”, where the myth of the capture of the Italian painter by bandits in the Abruzzi mountains is narrated. This work was presented at the Paris Salon of 1844 and later sold at another exhibition in Marseilles. Its whereabouts are currently unknown, but thanks to the engraving made by Charles Marville (1813-1879) for the Salon album of 1844 we know its original appearance. This work totally coincides with the image of the engraving, but according to the register of works of the salon of 1844, the size of the work presented by Guignet was 130 x 170 cm, therefore, although the dimensions of this work have been reduced slightly, it seems more likely that it is a version made later by Guignet himself.
