Guglielmi Gregorio, although born in Rome, completed his apprenticeship on German territory, mainly under the guidance of Sebastiano Conca. Among his foremost works there are the frescoes at the church of the Santissima Trinità degli Spagnoli, the Royal Palace of Turin, the Grand Gallery of Schönbrunn Palace, the Liebert Palace, etc. From 1769 onwards, he was employed by Katherine the Great of Russia, thus spending the latter part of his life at the Royal Palace in Saint Petersburg. The present work is a project painted in oil for one of his many frescoes in Italy. The image brings forth the ancient world of myths, legendary heroes and gods. The use of warm, bright colours and the manner of projecting the detailed figures reflects the artist's tendency to naturally merge the late Baroque influences of Conca with the developing Classicism of Pierre Subleyras and Marco Benefial. Gugliemi Gregorio's works are found at the Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia), the Louvre (Paris, France), the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna, Austria).
