      ARA GÜLER (* 1928) Henri Cartier-Bresson with Leica M3, 1964

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Gelatin silver print, printed in 2013 55 x 44 cm (21.7 x 17.3 in) Signed by the photographer in pencil in the margin, his blindstamp in the margin and his signed photographer's stamp on the reverse. This is the only large format print Güler ever made of this image LITERATURE Ara Güler, Creating the 20th Century, 100 Artists, Writers and Thinkers, Singapore 2011, p. 59. "A portrait is not simply the picture of a face," says Ara Güler, one of Turkey's most renowned photographers, "it is the entirety of a life." 86 years old today, Güler remembers Henri Cartier-Bresson: "He was like a big brother to me. He was 20 years older than me and taught me a lot. For me, he's the greatest." Through Cartier-Bresson, the doyen of the "decisive moment" and co-founder of Magnum, Güler joined the legendary agency in the early 1960s. Using perspectives reminiscent of his French role model, the "Eye of Istanbul" portrayed not only 20th-century artists, writers and thinkers, but also his native city as it was undergoing transformation: "Our work on Paris and Istanbul was similar in some ways: we both seized the moment when a world was disappearing - a world of artisans giving way to a world of mechanics." Voted "Master of Leica" in 1962, Güler took this photograph of his friend - as unexceptional as it is symbolic - two years later, using a M3 Chrome: "This portrait speaks volumes. I took it unexpectedly, just when his eye was distracted by a subject he was interested in shooting himself. The camera - a Leica of course - is at hand, ready for use." This Leica M3, which Cartier-Bresson used to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the film set for The Misfits (1961), among others, is lot 075 in the camera section.

      Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Gelatin silver print, printed in 2013 60 x 40 cm (23.6 x 15.7 in) Signed by the photographer in pencil in the margin, his blindstamp in the margin and his signed photographer's stamp on the reverse LITERATURE Ara Güler/Orhan Pamuk (eds.), Istanbul, Cologne 2010, cover and p. 65. "Nobody has captured, documented and preserved the Istanbul of the Fifties and Sixties, with its streets, pavements, shops, its run-down factories, its ships, horse-drawn carriages, busses, clouds, taxis, houses, bridges, chimneys, billows of smoke, people and its non-descript atmosphere, as well as Ara Güler," who "photographs not only the visual elements of Istanbul's streets, but their soul," as Orhan Pamuk writes in the coffee-table book in which the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Magnum photographer touchingly pay joint homage to their hometown. As the title image they chose the present photograph, which reflects the legendary Istanbul feeling of "hüzün", a kind of melancholy, particularly well. The two dark figures in their boats, the glittering water, the famous mosques and the Galata Bridge in the distance, out of focus, shrouded by fog. Affectionately interested in people, Güler particularly liked to roam the surrounding quarters, where the simple people lived - longshoremen and porters, fishermen and artisans, merchants and street urchins - his Leica always in hand. To Henri Cartier-Bresson, who travelled to Istanbul for the first time the year before this image was taken - when Güler created his unique portrait of the French master of the Leica (lot 132) - the image was like an awakening, bringing him back to the flow of photography after a creative hiatus.
