Exhibited: Leslie Smith Gallery at Mesker Decorators, The Hague, 1980s. Note: Including the abovementioned catalogue. Charles Grips was born in Grave in 1825 and studied at the Antwerp academy. Not only did he work in Grave and Brussels, but also in Vught, where he became one of the most important Dutch genre painters of the 19th century. His work is very reminiscent of the 17th century master Pieter de Hooch (1629-c.1684), which can clearly be seen in this painting by the use of light and arrangement of space. The sunlight streaming into the adjoining room and reflecting off the furniture creates a realistic sense of depth. Grips enlarges this effect through the use of parallel lines as can be seen in the table, chair, door and window; a method often used by De Hooch. The cat is a recurring subject in Grips oeuvre, symbolising domesticity and the feminine. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. Charles Joseph Grips (1825-1920, Dutch) born in Grave, Holland, was also known as Carel Jozeph Grips a painter, draftsman and lithographer who spent much of his life in Belgium. Grips paintings are primarily of highly detailed quiet kitchen interiors in the style of the seventeenth century painter Pieter de Hooch and many feature a cat. Grips left Antwerp in 1837, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He then became a pupil of Jan Hendrik van Grootvelt. Grips taught his sons Ernest and Frits Grips, and Antoon van Welie. He lived alternately in the Netherlands and Belgium until he settled in Vught permanently in 1881.
