      Ethan Allen Greenwood (MA, 1779-1856), Portrait of a Woman oil on panel, signed and dated 1816 at lower right, half-length portrait of an older woman in lace cap and holding a pair of brass framed spectacles, presented in the likely original gilt frame. Rabbet 30 x 23.5 in.; DOA 37 x 30.5 in. Ethan Allen Greenwood was born in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, a son of Major Moses Greenwood and Betsy Dunlap. After teaching at various schools and colleges, and studying the law at Dartmouth, Greenwood determined he would be more successful as a painter. Primarily self-taught, Greenwood also studied with Edward Savage in New York City. He opened a studio in Boston in 1812 and became the proprietor of the New England Museum following Savage's death in 1817. Greenwood retired to Hubbardston in 1827, where he was active in politics. A copy of A List of Portraits Painted by Ethan Allen Greenwood, published by the American Antiquarian Society in 1947, accompanies this lot. There was a Robert Ogden who married Elizabeth Spaight Nash ( became Nash-Ogden , a Famous Dynasty ) a noble family when genealogy trumped money as a dividing line between the elite and the masses and lived in North Carolina. His son, Robert ( who had four sons, Robert , Abner , Octavius and Frederick ), left in about 1810 settling first in Baton Rouge and then New Orleans. Cotton trading seems to be in the family blood.

Reference: Groce and Wallace,p. 274, Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, p. 346. Condition: Panel bowed, scattered retouch. Literature: See Vital Records of Holden, Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1904, p. 9. Zillah M. Chenery was born on July 12, 1771 in Holden, Worcester County, Massachusetts. She married Captain Lemuel Abbott (b. November 3, 1763), also of Holden, on July 3, 1791. They had four children, including three sons and a daughter. One son, Chenery Abbott, succeeded his father as a proprietor of the Abbott Tavern, which was built in 1763 and kept by the Abbots for three successive generations. Zillah died at the age of 72 in 1843.

He attended Dartmouth, studied law and in 1812 opened a studio in Boston. In 1818 he took over Savage's Museum. (a) A young blue-eyed woman wearing a lace mob cap and a V-neck olive green dress embellished with an organza ruff is seated in a chair gazing at the viewer, unframed. Condition: unrestored; minor paint losses and warping, sight ht. 27 1/2, wd. 21 in. (b) The young man wearing an olive green waistcoat and vest highlighted by a white high-standing collar, unframed. Condition: unrestored, some paint loss and warping. sight ht. 27 3/4, wd. 21 1/4 in. Provenance: Family descent to the consignor. Benjamin Shurtleff was born in Plympton, Massachusetts; married Sally Shaw, born in 1845 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in July 1803, and died in Boston in 1845. Note: Ethan Allen Greenwood was born in Hubbardstown, Massachusetts, in 1779 and began painting about 1801. During the ensuing eleven years, he attended Dartmouth College, studying law and teaching school. In 1806, he received instruction in New York City from Edward Savage. In 1812, he opened a painting studio in Boston, where he painted many portraits. After 1827, he returned to Hubbardstown, where he lived until his death.

      Wonderful oil on canvas folk portrait of a fancy dressed woman including blue dress, lace shawl pinned with colorful brooch, decorated belt with buckle. She wears long gold evening gloves. Jewelry includes three strands of gold beads, gold and coral drop earrings, a pearl hair pin. Her long brown hair has been braided and wrapped in a bun with curls dropping off sides of her face. Signed lower left "Greenwood Pinx 1812". Housed in its original lemon gold molded wood frame.
