Folio: [12]-120 pp.; 25 pl. (pl. 21 bound upside down, sm. marg. repairs, sl. browned, a bit foxed and with some light damp stains). - Rare complete "Straetsboeck" (1st ed.), a pilot guide of the Mediterranean with (according to the title and 2 map cartouches) newly cut copperplates by Pieter Goos. Goos, an Amsterdam bookseller, bought the plates from Anthonie Jacobsz's "Zeespiegel" in 1650, but for this "Straetsboeck", he engraved, printed and published the charts in his own bookshop "Op 't Water". The text was after Jacobsz's 1656 ed. of "Straetsboek", named after the voyage through the Straits of Gibraltar. Nice copy with some signs of use, just enough to make it stand out as a seaworthy atlas! - Ref. Koeman, Goos 44A. - Prov. "Simon Van Lissum"? (ms. entry).

Goos' Gorgeous Chart of the Mid-Atlantic & New England. Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States. Pieter Goos, Pas Caerte van Nieu Nederlandt en de Engelsche Virginies Van Cabo Cod tot Cabo Canrick, from De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Weereld, 1666 (dated). Hand Color. This attractive chart of the Atlantic coast extends from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Boston Harbor and Cape Cod. It is nearly identical to a chart issued 5 years earlier by Joannes van Loon, which itself resembles a chart by Hendrick Doncker published in 1660. The chart presents good detail of the coastlines in the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, along with improvements to the New Jersey coastline including its outer sandbanks and the correct positioning of Cape Cod. Many important place names are located including James Towne, Manhates ofte Nieu Amsterdam, Staten Eylandt and Patuxet of New Pleymont. Rood Eylant is prominently depicted in Narragansett Bay. Burden notes that while the English controlled the region at the time of publication, the chart continues to use Dutch names (likely a byproduct of Goos copying van Loon's earlier work). The chart is finely embellished with compass roses, sailing ships, and two allegorical cartouches.

Britain. Pieter Goos, Pas-Caart vant Canaal Vertoonende in 't Gheheel Engelandt, Schotlandt, Yrlandt..., 1675 (dated). Hand Color. This uncommon sea chart covers all of Britain and Ireland as well as the northern coast of France with north oriented to the right. The coastlines are filled with place names and the surrounding waters include soundings, shoals, fishing banks, sand bars, and other navigational hazards. The chart is decorated by two banner cartouches, two compass roses, rhumb lines, and the royal arms of each country. Pieter Goos was one of Amsterdam’s most prominent publishers of nautical charts. The reputation of his firm was matched only by that of the publishing houses of Blaeu and van Keulen and his maritime atlas of the world was one of the most complete sea atlases published prior to the appearance of Van Keulen’s Zee-Fakkel in the 1680s. The Zee-Atlas was often published with Blaeu's Atlas Maior, the most lavish and expensive cartographic publication of the period.

GOOS, PIETER - Caribbean Islands Sea Chart 1666

          Est: $1,500 - $1,750

Amsterdam: 1666. Engraved sea chart, period hand-colouring in outline. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 25 inches. Minor age toning. Fine seventeenth century sea chart of the islands of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles. The seventeenth century was the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. As the world's greatest trading nation, marine cartography was a particular specialty, and no one produced more lavish sea charts than Pieter Goos. Famed for its beauty, Koeman notes that Goos' sea-atlas was more intended for the booklover than for the seaman. Finely drawn and engraved, printed on top quality paper, and beautifully coloured, they were intended more for the merchant collector than the practical mariner. Goos' Zee-Atlas was the companion marine atlas of choice for Blaeu's famous terrestrial atlas, the Atlas Maior. Pieter Goos was one of Amsterdams most prominent publishers of nautical charts. The reputation of his firm was matched only by that of the publishing houses of Blaeu and van Keulen (Putnam). This fine chart depicts the islands of the Antilles and the northern coast of South America. It is oriented with west to the top of the map. The map is decorated with a compass rose, as well as a pair of galleons and a decorative cartouche.

          Est: €15,000 - €25,000

GOOS Pieter (c. 1616 - 1675) « West-Indische Paskaert …

GOOS, Pieter (1615/1616-1675). Orbis Terrarum Nova et accuratissima tabula. Nieuwe Werelt Kaert. [Amsterdam: 1666 or later]. Very rare double-hemisphere world map, from Pieter Goos' maritime atlas, 'the finest printed at the time' (Shirley). This map's predecessors were the world maps published by Visscher and Blaeu - in fact Goos' atlases were often added to Blaeu's Atlas Maior as a maritime supplement. The spandrels are fully decorated, the upper filled with a flock of birds – including a Goose – flying across sunbeams illuminating the world through parted clouds, the lower with anthropomorphic representations of the four seasons. Only 3 copies can be traced at auction since 1975 (ABPC/RBH). Koeman IV, Goos 1 (1); Shirley World 438 ('expertly engraved hemispheres'). Engraved double-hemisphere world map, coloured by a contemporary hand, verso blank, titles in Latin and Dutch in top left- and right-hand roundels with borders of birds and fishes respectively, north and south poles to lower left- and right-hand corners, California as an island with a flat-topped northern coastline with island of 'Anian' to its north, decorative spandrels, heads of the four winds in surrounding cloudscape, 444 x 541mm (plate mark), 482 x 572mm (sheet).

          Est: £70,000 - £100,000

GOOS, Pieter (1616-1675). L’Atlas de la Mer ou Monde aquaticque représentant toutes les costes maritimes. Amsterdam: Pieter Goos, 1670. A sumptuous copy, beautifully hand-coloured and heightened with gold by a contemporary artist. Hendrik Doncker was the originator of this form of sea-atlas and most of Goos’s charts were copied from him. Koeman observes (IV, p.193) that the publisher hardly varied the content of the many editions which appeared between 1666 and 1683. Our copy may be one of those sold by the Amsterdam bookbinder Albertus Magnus, following Goos’s death in 1675, as Koeman notes that ‘These copies are famous for their outstanding colour’. In fact, the very effective use of colouring led Koeman to conjecture that Goos’s sea-atlas was ‘more intended for the book-lover than for the seaman’. There are some very striking maps, including an interesting depiction of Hudson's Bay just prior to the formation of the Hudson's Bay Company (Burden I, 386). Also included are 2 maps of the New Netherlands. One is of the eastern seaboard from Boston Harbor to Cape Hatteras (Burden I, 387). The other, 'Paskaerte van de Zuyd en Noordt Revier in Nieu Nederlandt,' of the Dutch and Swedish colonies, 'is the rarest of the Goos charts of North America' (Burden I, 388), and was most probably issued separately, and only added to the atlas as a supplementary chart. Koeman IV, Goos 2C; NMM III(1), 96; Shirley BL M.GOOS-2f. Tall folio (520 x 320mm). Engraved title and 40 plates, all with contemporary hand-colouring and heightened with gold, one folding, the rest double-page, mounted on guards (title short at fore-edge and presumably supplied, also a little soiled and frayed at margins). Contemporary vellum, central lozenge in blind frame with small acorn at angles, uncut (light scratch marks, spine a little worn at foot, corners bumped).

Southeastern England, London, Thames River. Pieter Goos, Pascaarte van Engelant van t' Voorlandt tot aen Blakeney waer in te Sien is de Mont vande Teemse, 1666 (circa). Hand Color. This uncommon sea chart spans the southeastern coast of England from the mouth of the Thames to Norfolk. It is inset with a map continuing the course of the Thames to London. Both the main and inset charts feature decorative title cartouches, rhumb lines, anchorages, and soundings. There are two fleur-de-lis capped compass roses and a sailing ship in the North Sea.

West Indische Paskaert. Johannes Loots (c. 1665-1726) & Pieter Goos (1615-1675) Engraved map with original hand color. Amsterdam: Joannes Loot, [ca. 1695]. 33 2/8 x 39 6/8 inches sheet, 42 x 49 inches framed. An exceptionally fine engraved map of the Atlantic Ocean This is the Johannes Loots state of Willem Blaeus second West Indische Paskaert (ca. 1630), a map of landmark importance, being the first sea chart relating to North America to use Gerard Mercators projection. It is probable that the sea chart was originally intended for the sole use of the Dutch West India Company and the map shows the area chartered to the Company in 1621. The latest geographical information included is derived from the voyage of the Admiral LHermite to Tierra del Fuego between 1623 and 1626. The map extends from Ireland to New-Foundland in the north and to the Cape of Good Hope and Rio de la Plata in the south, and from the Gulf of Mexico in the west to Greece in the east. An inset map in the interior of South America shows that part of the continent which could not be included in the main map. Even by the latter part of the seventeenth century, this map remained enormously important for Western navigation to Brazil, because it was only in 1685 that the first charts of the Brazilian coast were published by Robijn. GOOS, 1668 DE ZEE-ATLAS OFTE WATER-WERELD, WAER IN VERTOONT WERDEN ALLE DE ZEE-KUSTEN VAN HET BEKENDE DES AERD-BODEMS SEE DIENSTIGH VOOR ALLE HEEREN EN KOOPLIEDEN. AMSTERDAM: P. GOOS, 1668 folio (455 x 290mm.), [18]pp., illustration: printed title within elaborate engraved allegorical border incorporating vignette, and 40 double-page or folding engraved sea- and coastal charts, contemporary hand colour, binding: contemporary vellum, green silk ties, title with 2 wormholes, frayed at edges (just affecting engraved area), some marginal soiling and staining at lower margins, a few maps with narrow upper margin, binding slightly soiled LITERATURE Koeman IV, Goos 5A (the charts as 1B, with revisions as described under 5A); Phillips, Atlases 5690 NOTE Although Goos was one of the best-known maritime booksellers of Amsterdam, and responsible for publishing a number of different sea-atlases or pilots, his work was very much derivative. For example, in the case of the Zee-Atlas, Goos relied heavily on Hendrick Doncker's Zee-Atlas, published in 1659, for his charts. Goos's background was more as an engraver - following on from his father Abraham. Unlike Doncker and his other contemporaries, Pieter Goos's intention was less to produce a functional sea-atlas but more a visually appealing volume to be consulted in a library environment - hence the emphasis on the title-page on the utility of the atlas to "Heeren en Kooplieden" (gentlemen and merchants) in advance of "Schippers en Stuurlieden" (pilots and seamen). Unlike his rivals, Goos never undertook substantial revision of his Zee-Atlas, either of the text or charts. Indeed, there are only minor differences between editions. The standard form of the index calls for forty charts, which can be assumed to be the expected complement, but the Zee-Atlas was also available with forty-one charts, and individual examples of the various editions can be found with an additional chart. Perhaps the most famous chart in the volume is the "Paskaert van Nova Grenada, en t'Eylandt California", one of the two earliest Dutch printed charts to focus on the "island" of California, a famous and long-lived cartographic misconception.
