SARAH GOODRIDGE (MASSACHUSETTS, 1788-1853), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A BOY

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

SARAH GOODRIDGE (MASSACHUSETTS, 1788-1853), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A BOY, watercolor, an outstanding example, the waist-length depiction of a youthful fair-haired subject wearing dark blue coat bearing three rows of brass buttons and white lace collar, he appears to be holding a cluster of grapes, no signature located. Housed in original yellow gold (not tested) brooch-style frame bearing period inscription verso "M. J. / to / Almira Heard / 1839". Dated 1839. 2 3/8" x 2" OA. Catalogue Note: The subject in the present portrait is likely John Theodore Heard (b. 1836), who was the son of Almira P. Heard (1814-1885) and John Trull Heard (1809-1880), who were married on May 28, 1836 in Cambridge, MA.  The artist, Sarah Goodridge (1788-1853), was a popular miniaturist based in Boston, MA. Though largely self-taught, she did study informally with Gilbert Stuart in 1820. At the peak of her career, she made trips to Washington, DC to create portraits of various luminaries such as Daniel Webster. The present miniature is an exceptional example of her work.

ATTRIBUTED TO SARAH GOODRIDGE American, 1788-1853 Four young children, two boys and two girls. One girl swings on a swing. Sarah Goodridge (b. Boston) was self-taught, but after meeting Gilbert Stuart, her works became less primitive. This is probably one of her early works, c. 1805-1812. Notes on reverse state the companion piece to this work is in the M. and M. Karolik Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Our research has shown that currently there is nothing in the museum that might be a companion piece to this work. Watercolor, 4 7/8" x 6 7/8". Gilt frame.
