Item Overview

Description

ATTRIBUTED TO SARAH GOODRIDGE
American, 1788-1853

Four young children, two boys and two girls. One girl swings on a swing. Sarah Goodridge (b. Boston) was self-taught, but after meeting Gilbert Stuart, her works became less primitive. This is probably one of her early works, c. 1805-1812. Notes on reverse state the companion piece to this work is in the M. and M. Karolik Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Our research has shown that currently there is nothing in the museum that might be a companion piece to this work.
Watercolor, 4 7/8" x 6 7/8". Gilt frame.

Condition Report

Three repaired tears, one about 4" long in the right upper corner and two smaller ones below on both sides. They are visible five or six feet away. There appears to be no paper loss. It could probably be restored further to hide the tears. There is some slight spotting and toning. The watercolor is backed by a new piece of white board.
