Later in the Irish Sale, Christies London, May 2003, Lot. 39 where purchased.Literature: “Norman Garstin : Irishman and Newlyn Artist” by Richard Pryke 2005 Catalogue Raisonné listed Page 208 in year 1912.Pardon days captivated a number of British, Irish and European artists who visited Brittany in the late 19th Century and early 20th century. A letter from Norman Garstin to his daughter Alethea from 1912 is in the Garstin papers and seems to capture the moment depicted in this picture which occurred on a summer sketching party at Guémené sur Scorff in early July 1912: the party suddenly came across a tiny church by a couple of farmhouses, very primitive and simple. Just as we arrived the procession started, all peasants, some men and women carrying banners, and a few little red acolytes attending the priest in a yellow cape. The peasants were all in costume coifs and lovely aprons, and, as they wound amongst the farm buildings, and thro’ the defiles of a little wood flecked with sun, they made lots of delightful pictures. Then out into a meadow with apple trees where they sang and played on terrible trumpets, but it was all wonderfully pictorial. Then they filed back again singing their ora pro nobis and came to the back of the church, where there was a great pile of brush wood. The people stood in a circle and the yellow robed priest set fire to the great pile … the effect was really delightful and pagan. It was St. John’s Eve and these fires come down from the druids tho’ the good people did not know it. I stood on a cart and made a scribble … but can not help that it would make a jolly subject to a fairly large picture.”It would appear that this work and a larger work exhibited at the 1913 Royal Academy Exhibition were a result of this encounter. This work remained in the artist’s collection and was in his studio at the time of his death. Our thanks to Richard Pryke whose writings on Garstin formed the basis of this catalogue entry.

Illustrated plate 10, page 50Provenance: De Veres, November 2001, Lot No.165, where purchased by present owner. Our thanks to them for their permission to reproduce this catalogue note. This beautiful work was painted by Garstin while he was in Morocco from mid 1885 to mid 1886. Garstin did not embark on his career as a painter until 1880, having previously had a somewhat desultory life, including diamond mining at Kimberley (where he shared a mess tent with Cecil Rhodes). From 1881 to 1884 he trained in the studio of Carolus-Duran, the fashionable Parisian portrait painter, who also trained Singer Sargent. In Paris he became friendly with Ion Perdicaris: a wealthy and colourful Greek-American, who knew Karl Marx. After leaving Paris, Garstin took the opportunity to travel in Italy, Spain, and Morocco, where he stayed with Perdicaris. While he was in Morocco Garstin painted 25 or more pictures. Many of these were small and some were only sketches. The present work is therefore of particular interest as being one of the few large Moroccan pictures. It is likely to be Alienis Mensibus AEstas (summer in unseasonable months). This was exhibited at the Summer Exhibition of the Aberdeen Artists Society, at a price of å£45, and appears to have been sold. The picture is a characteristic work being realist (and not impressionist) with a careful and economical use of paint, and, like some of his other works, has great atmosphere. The simple subject matter is also typical of Garstin, who was not, like many other artists of the time, attracted by hareems and the exotic. Dr. Richard Pryke

Garstin (Norman, 1847-1926). Corner of a large garden with herbaceous border and greenhouse, oil on wood panel, showing part of a large Victorian greenhouse with a border of lilies, delphiniums, and poppies, and an evergreen in a terracotta pot, signed lower right, 27 x 20.5cm (10.5 x 8ins), period gilt moulded frame. A leading figure of the Newlyn School, Norman Garstin is also famous for his work as an art critic and teacher as well as a painter. He was born in Ireland and vacillated about his choice of career before turning to art full-time, studying in Paris and Antwerp. He arrived in Newlyn in 1886, moving to Penzance in 1889 where he finally settled. Garstin's work, often small oil panels in the 'plein air' style as here, in this snapshot of a country house garden, is characterised by soft, muted colours and Impressionistic brushwork. His most famous work is 'The Rain it Raineth Every Day' (1889), showing Penzance promenade on a rainy day (held at Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance). Full page illustration p117 ''The French Connection'' 2010 Exhibition Catalogue, full page illustration p8 Norman Garstin was born at Cahirconlish, Co. Limerick. In 1880 Garstin travelled to Antwerp where he studied under Charles Verlat for two years before moving to Paris where he met Degas and studied under Carolus-Duran for three years at the same academy as Roderic O'Conor. He painted in both Brittany and Normandy and later went on to become one of the leading lights of the Newlyn School of painters along with Stanhope Forbes. This garden scene with lilies, and the red rooftops, is reminiscent of Osborne's English scenes, for example 'A Cottage Garden', 1888, but the presence of two nuns who emerge through the archway suggests that this may be a Breton scene.
