        Est: €16,000 - €18,000

FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, 1898-Víznar a Alfacar, Granada, 1936) "Clown on a Circus Ring (Granada)", c. 1925. Indian ink and coloured pencils on paper. With pencil drawing on the back. Work exhibited at the Galería Banco de Granada (1977) and the University of Salamanca (1977). Work reproduced in "Federico García Lorca. Drawings". Editorial Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Madrid, 1987. Provenance: Miguel Rodríguez-Acosta Calstrom and Ramón Pérez Roda collection. Measurements: 20.5 x 14 cm; 35 x 28.5 cm (frame). This work must have been made in 1925, around the same time as the Clown with the Glove, to which it is united by so many aesthetic characteristics. This was probably one of the drawings shown at that time, since the collection owned by Pérez Roda was the result of a gift of some of the drawings from that exhibition. "Federico García Lorca. Drawings", in which this work is reproduced, is the catalogue of the travelling exhibition held in Caracas, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Mexico City and New York between May and December 1987. Lorca has gone down in history as one of the great poets of the 20th century, but his creative activity encompassed theatre, prose, music, painting and drawing. A significant fact that confirms how important his artistic production was to the author was the fact that most of his drawings were signed to show his authorship. Rafael Alberti, poet of the Generation of 1927, recounted with fascination: "Lorca, when he picked up some coloured pencils or the same pen with which he wrote his poems, still had the freshness of a fountain, the grace of a game in the street, the smile of a courtyard, a cock of a weather vane, of all that he had seen or heard, he did not know when with the eyes of his childhood in Granada: vases with fish and flowers, virgins pierced by daggers, girls in windows and on rooftops, angels in towers, manolas, harlequins, bandits and drunken sailors in love, all the themes and figures of his lyrical and dramatic poetry, up to the time of the Romancero gitano, a year before he left for New York, a time when his style changed, no doubt infected by the surrealist atmosphere that was already spreading throughout almost all of Europe". A member of the Generation of '27, he was the most influential and popular poet in 20th century Spanish literature. As a playwright, he is considered one of the greatest Spanish playwrights of the 20th century, along with Valle-Inclán and Buero Vallejo. He was shot dead by Franco's authorities one month after the coup d'état that started the Spanish Civil War.

        ANTONIO ORZAEZ (Madrid, 1933-2021).

        Est: €700 - €800

ANTONIO ORZAEZ (Madrid, 1933-2021). Album of photographs of Nuria Espert (Hospital-et de Llobregat, 1935), in the play Yerma by Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, 1898-Víznar a Alfacar, Granada, 1936), Teatro Coliseum, Valladolid, 1973. The lot includes some of the negatives of the photographs. Provenance: Private Collection Antonio Orzaez (1933-2021). Sizes: 13 x 18 cm; 15.5 x 24 cm. The first time that Yerma was premiered in the theatre was in 1934, at the Spanish theatre in Madrid, starring the great muse of Lorquiana, Margarita Xirgú. Several years later, in 1971, the director Virctór García and Nuria Espert's theatre company staged Lorca's play again, which took them to many Spanish theatres. This representation was a great rupture due to the abstraction of the set based on a large white canvas mounted on a metal frame and a costume reduced to the colours black and white. The distancing from a realistic and traditional representation of the work, linked to a much more abstract image, was the idea of the set designer Fabiá Puigserver. In these five images we see Nuria Espert playing the leading role in Yerma. Antonio Orzaez was a professional photographer and a leading figure in the Spanish avant-garde. Orzaez directed his work towards the world of art, portraying and documenting the work and life of many artists who were indispensable in the development of Spanish painting, with whom he established personal friendships, such as Picasso, Tàpies, Clavé, Miró, etc. Throughout his life he built up a magnificent collection consisting of a multitude of cameras, lenses, lenses, books, photographs and works of art.

Monod 7276. – "5 empreintes gravées et compositions en couleurs et au lavis gravés sur bois". Eines von 220 numerierten Exemplaren auf Grand Vélin d'Arches (Gesamtauflage: 300 Exemplare). Druckvermerk vom Verleger signiert. "Sanchez Mejias was a famous bullfighter, writer and passionate lover of literature. He and Lorca were destined to become friends, and did so through a mutual friend, Encarncion Lopez Julvez, who was a famous dancer and singer and was also known as 'La Argentinita'. Sanchez Mejias was her manager, and it was to her that Lorca dedicated the poem. On August 11th, 1934 at the age of 43, Sanchez Mejias re-entered the bullring at the request of another bull fighter who was injured. At this time Lorca was in the town of Santander. This seems to come across in the narrative style of the Lament, that Lorca has shown up sometime after the tragic event to see Mejias lying dead. Lorca used the lyrical devices learnt in his earlier poems and combined them with the narrative style of the historical ballad. Overall, the poem uses the rhythm of a 'gypsy lament' which carries the emotional impact of the tragedy." – Stellenweise mit geringem Abklatsch, sonst sehr sauberes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.

Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), Faces, around 1930

        Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Pen and ink drawing on paper Spain, around 1930 Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) - Spanish writer and poet Signed with 'Federico Garcia Lorca' lower right Matted and mounted in a gilt wooden frame Sheet dimensions: 21 x 14 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany The present pen and ink drawing by Federico García Lorca, one of the most important Spanish writers of the 20th century, is an absolute rarity on the art market The pen and ink drawing is the work of the Spanish writer and poet Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) and can therefore be regarded as a rare collector's item. The drawing shows a reduced and surreal composition with faces, arrows and tears in an indeterminate space. Lorca wrote several surrealist works, including 'Poeta en Nueva York' [Poet in New York, 1929-1930]. In 1929, he went to New York and met the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, who was to become a close friend. Most likely, Dalí had a deep influence on Lorca's work. The sheet is signed with 'Federico Garcia Lorca"' lower right, being in overall condition with a major discoloration of the paper due to age. The sheet was torn from a notebook and shows blemishes to the right margin. It is mounted under a mat to the upper margin and framed in a gilt wooden frame with the size of 46.5 x 39 cm. The sheet dimensions are 21 x 14 cm. Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) Born in the province of Granada, Federico García Lorca studied law, literature and philosophy, first at the University of Granada, and then at the Complutense in Madrid until 1928. There he met the director Luis Buñuel and the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. With Dalí he maintained a close friendship. In 1929, Lorca went to New York and studied at the Columbia University. In 1930, he traveled to Cuba. His literary works are characterized by a mixture of secular tradition and the modernism of the 20th century. Many works deal with social-critical contents. In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, he was murdered for political reasons. One of Lorca's most famous works is the tragedy 'The House of Bernarda Alba'. GARCIA LORCA FEDERICO: (1898-1936) Spanish Poet & Dramatist. An extremely rare fountain pen ink signature and inscription, 'Para la niña Hilda Ruiz, Hermosa sin comparacion, Recuerdo de Federico Garcia Lorca', on an oblong 4to page removed from an autograph album. A small newspaper portrait and printed text are neatly affixed in the lower right corner with decorative ink borders and the date, June 1930, presumably added in the hand of the collector. Some slight show through from the fountain pen ink signature of Lydia de Rivera, a Cuban Singer, to the verso. A good example of Garcia Lorca's decorative signature. Autographs of the Spanish Poet are extremely rare in any form following his murder, at the age of 38, by fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. Some light, uniform age toning, about VG. FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA (1898-1936) Poeta español y dramaturgo.
