GIOVANNI ANTONIO FUMIANI - St. Anne with the Virgin and angels1674 ca.

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

GIOVANNI ANTONIO FUMIANI (Venice, 1643 – 1710) St. Anne with the Virgin and angels 1674 ca. Oil on canvas, 178 x 150 cm The painter, born in Venice, attended Domenico Ambrogi’s workshop in Bologna where he learned the art of quadraturism and perspective. This is what we see in this painting representing the Virgin, in the center, in a royal position surrounded by angels. Behind her, Saint Anne, her mother, givimng a certain verticality to the painting, a rhythm emphasized by columns with Corinthian capitals in the background. This painting was probably painted in 1675-1676, when his personal language was inspired by Veronese’s paintings.

      Giovanni Antonio Fumiani

      Est: £13,000 - £18,000

Giovanni Antonio Fumiani Venice circa 1645 - 1710 abraham and the three angels oil on canvas 129 by 183 cm.; 50 3/4 by 72 in. Fumiani was trained in Bologna but had returned to his native Venice by 1668. Thereafter the early influence of Ludovico Carracci on his style is entirely supplanted by that of Veronese, as is evident in this painting as well as, for example, his Jesus preaching in the Temple of similar dimensions (137 by 162 cm.) sold in these rooms, 17 May 1961, lot 133. We are grateful to Prof. Bernard Aikema for confirming the traditional attribution to Fumiani on the basis of photographs.
