Fumiani was trained in Bologna but had returned to his native Venice by 1668. Thereafter the early influence of Ludovico Carracci on his style is entirely supplanted by that of Veronese, as is evident in this painting as well as, for example, his Jesus preaching in the Temple of similar dimensions (137 by 162 cm.) sold in these rooms, 17 May 1961, lot 133.
