Frölicher 1863’ Dimensions: 63 x 89.5 cm Gilt wooden stucco frame: 84.5 x 107.5 cm Good condition Besides Johann Adolf Otto Stäbli, Otto Viktor Frölicher (1840-1890) is regarded as one of the most talented exponents of the German-Swiss ‘Paysage Intime’. In contrast to most of his colleagues, Frölicher focused on rather gloomy landscapes. Like the artists of the Romantic era, Frölicher’s landscapes are images of his inner life. His contemporaries therefore regarded his works as quite modern. Condition: The painting is in good condition, showing some craquelure consistent with age and a slight soiling of the paint surface. The inspection under UV light reveals a small area of retouching to the right margin. The frame is slightly chipped to the edges. The dimensions of the painting are 63 x 89.5 cm, and the frame measures 84.5 x 107.5 cm. From 1863 to 1865, he continued his studies in Düsseldorf. He there was inspired by the paintings of Oswald Achenbach. In 1868, he moved to Munich and discovered the ‘intimate mood landscape’ of Adolf Heinrich Liers. From 1877, he worked as a professor of painting. Frölicher joined the artist group Kassandra and the artists association Allotria. Today, works by the artist are in major museum collections, including the Art Museums in Bern and Solothurn, the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. Frölicher 1863’ Dimensions: 63 x 89.5 cm Gilt wooden stucco frame: 84.5 x 107.5 cm Good condition Besides Johann Adolf Otto Stäbli, Otto Viktor Frölicher (1840-1890) is regarded as one of the most talented exponents of the German-Swiss ‘Paysage Intime’. In contrast to most of his colleagues, Frölicher focused on rather gloomy landscapes. Like the artists of the Romantic era, Frölicher’s landscapes are images of his inner life. His contemporaries therefore regarded his works as quite modern. Condition: The painting is in good condition, showing some craquelure consistent with age and a slight soiling of the paint surface. The inspection under UV light reveals a small area of retouching to the right margin. The frame is slightly chipped to the edges. The dimensions of the painting are 63 x 89.5 cm, and the frame measures 84.5 x 107.5 cm. Otto Frölicher (1840-1890) Born in Solothurn, Otto Frölicher studied under the guidance of Johann Gottfried Steffan at the Academy in Munich from 1859. From 1863 to 1865, he continued his studies in Düsseldorf. He there was inspired by the paintings of Oswald Achenbach. In 1868, he moved to Munich and discovered the ‘intimate mood landscape’ of Adolf Heinrich Liers. From 1877, he worked as a professor of painting. Frölicher joined the artist group Kassandra and the artists association Allotria. Today, works by the artist are in major museum collections, including the Art Museums in Bern and Solothurn, the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
