Louis (Harry Louis) Freund (1905-1999) Mattison's Blacksmith Shop, Conway Arkansas 1935 or 1936 The untitled Regionalist Movement oil on Masonite is signed and dated by Louis Freund lower right front. The date is a bit illegible. While the artist didn't provide a title for this painting, or name the location, he does provide a clue with the sign out front lettered MATTISON. In September of 2021, the City of Conway, Arkansas commissioned an ' African American Historic Context Study' in which researchers documented the history of Black-owned businesses in Conway. Researchers found that, '' The Mattison family started a blacksmith shop at Mill and Markham in the early 1900s, which grew into a general repair and welding shop then transitioned to auto repair;'' They also observed that, .'' Black-owned businesses in the neighborhood included a cafe, a dry cleaner, and several small grocery stores/confectionaries mixed into the fabric of the residential areas; these small neighborhood stores did not have a large selection and neighborhood residents walked or drove downtown to White-owned grocery for some items.'' One could argue there are other clues suggesting this is a painting of the Mattison property in old Conway, Arkansas. This scene depicts a blacksmith shop next to a clapboard grocery seemingly held together by tin advertising signs - the name Mattison being painted on one of them. Another advertises Butter-Nut Bread. It has been recorded that around 1920, Willie and Luella Mattison purchased a property at 349 Markham Street and owned a blacksmith shop next door. Also, the artist portrays a dark-skinned girl wearing a yellow dress standing outside the clapboard structure, while through the screen door there appears to be the figure of a dark skinned boy wearing a hat. Add to this that from 1933 until 1949, Louis Freund spent a great deal of time in and around the town of Conway as student, artist and teacher. At about the time this picture was made, he was, in his own words, working, '' As a Works Progress Administration painter in Arkansas in 1936 with a $40 Model T Ford and a grant of $76 a month for expenses, I drove to the Ozarks and Missouri and made pictures of a way of life which was rapidly disappearing. The works were sent to Washington to decorate government offices, and hospital rooms later.'' The artist went on to recall of this period, '' Under government-sponsored competitions, I was awarded $20 per square foot to paint murals in small post offices in three states to commemorate local history.'' Two of the murals he mentions were in Arkansas, including one in the town of Heber Springs, an hour from Conway. Perhaps more research could confirm what appears to be a very strong case for the attribution of the scene depicted here. The Mattison family enjoys a long, rich history of prominence in Conway. Their ranks include more than a few doctors (Dr. Columbus A. Mattison was Conway's first African American doctor), generations of blacksmiths, teachers, farmers, preachers, and Tuskegee Airman Major William T. Mattison. Harry Louis Freund (Missouri / Arkansas, 1905-1999) A Circus Backlot Circa 1935. The classic example of 1930s American realism depicts the sunlit backlot of a traveling circus and the activities of workers, perhaps performers, in everyday clothing tending to everyday chores of housekeeping and maintenance while the colorful Ferris wheel and waving flags of the circus suggest a less banal experience beyond the troupe's wagons. This work is signed lower right by Louis Freund, the grass roots Regionalist from Clinton, Missouri, and displayed in what appears to be its original frame. Louis Freund was a lifelong artist who received mural commissions during the WPA era, worked as an illustrator, exhibited widely, won numerous awards, and held a number of positions as art instructor throughout the 20th century. He and his wife, Elsie Bates Freund, founded the Summer Art School in Eureka Springs (Carroll County) and helped shape that resort town as a year-round community for artists and writers. Louis Freund was born on September 16, 1905, in Clinton, Missouri. His father died while Louis was young. He was inspired to become an artist by his mother, who painted copies of other paintings; an uncle who painted miniature portraits; and a cousin, Evelyn Sturgis. Freund attended the University of Missouri at Columbia from 1923 to 1925 and Washington University in St. Louis from 1925 to 1929. In 1929, he received the E.H. Wuerpel travel scholarship for one year of foreign travel and study; while in Paris, he studied at the Colarossi Academy and La Grande Chaumiere. Freund returned to the United States and, from 1930 to 1932, worked as a professional artist in New York City. He found work with the federally supported fine arts section of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and began competing for mural commissions. Freund traveled through the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri for months to record the vanishing culture of that area. He painted murals on post office and bank buildings in Heber Springs (Cleburne County), Pocahontas (Randolph County), Eureka Springs, Rogers (Benton County), and Harrison (Boone County), as well as in Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri. Freund is said to have sent 100 paintings to Washington DC. Freund was also a draftsman, easel painter, and printmaker, and his work followed five broad themes: European landscape, American genre, protest against war, regional landscape, and Christian subject matter. Freund’s style sought for emotional impact in the use of dramatic heavy outlines, somber colors, and compositions with strong diagonal axis. His style in the beginning was light and illustrative and seemed more adventuristic in terms of expression, whereas his later works followed great traditions in artistic styles. As in early Renaissance painting, Freund tended to compress time and space elements in order to capture everything in a cohesive moment—an ability useful in mural painting.

A circa 1935 view of the Missouri Ozarks. Louis Freund's biography is full of accomplishments in study, teaching, founding of art departments, founding of art colonies, exhibitions and too much more to list here. He is most important as an artist of the American scene during the Great Depression. It is this period of his career as an artist that is most closely associated with this work. The following passage from his biography compiled by the University of Arkansas provides insight into this work and its significance among the artist's accomplishments and its place in American Art history. "During the 1930s commissions granted by the Works Progress Administration allowed him (Louis Freund) to travel throughout rural Ozark areas in Arkansas and Missouri, painting murals for public buildings and scenes of American life. From 1939 to 1946, he was a Resident Artist (1939-1941) and then Art Department Head (1941-1946) at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas." This work is signed lower right, the artist's board measures 18 x 23.75 inches, the fine frame measures 23.5 x 19.25 inches. Provenance: from a private Midwest collection focused on the work of Freund and other regionalists of the period 1925 to 1945. titled, and dated. Important Missouri regionalist painter. He studied at the University of Missouri and the St. Louis School of Fine Art in the 1920s. He was a member of the Arkansas Watercolor Society, Southern States Art League, Ozark Art Association, Florida Artist Group, and the National Society of Mural Painters. He exhibited at the St. Louis Artist Guild, Ozark Art Association, Denver Art Museum, Kansas City Art Institute, National Academy of Design, Southern States Art League, and College, Stetson University, Hendrix College, and was the founder of the Art School of the Ozarks.
