English-born Fletcher (1866-1950) trained as a painter-printmaker in London, and taught art in London, Reading and Edinburgh in the early 1900s, before moving to California in 1924 to become director of the Santa Barbara School of the Arts (1924-30). He later lived in Los Angeles and Ojai.

    Frank Morley Fletcher (American/ British, 1866-1949) "Waterway," color woodcut, pencil signed and numbered 42/100 lower margin. The educator, author, painter, and printmaker was greatly influenced in the late 19th Century by the Japanese aesthetic in woodblock printing. In 1916 his treatise, Wood-Block Printing, was published in London. Fletcher later immigrated to the U.S. to direct the School of the Arts in Santa Barbara. Today his woodcuts are held in numerous public collections, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the British Museum. Image; 5 7/8" x 16 1/8". Foxing visible in margins. Possible fading. 1/16" hole bottom margin left side.

    Frank Morley Fletcher (1866-1950); colour woodcut "Meadowsweet", signed in pencil, 29 x 19cm, framed and glazed, also a copy of "Wood-Block Printing", a description of the craft of woodcutting and colour printing based on the Japanese practice by F Morley Fletcher, published by Sir Isaac Pitman & sons, London. The colour woodcut "Meadowsweet" in this lot is illustrated and the frontispiece to the book. Frank Morley Fletcher was a well known British painter and print maker, a major influence in introducing Japanese coloured woodcut printing in Western art (2).

We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 20 years. Born in England, Fletcher (1866-1950) was instrumental in bringing the art of the color woodcut to America in the early 20th-century. He eventually settled in Santa Barbara, California.
