          English School, 17th Century A pair of silver-cased portraits of a Royalist gentleman and a lady (stamped with a single unidentifiable mark), the cases of oval form, flat based with friction fitting somewhat domed covers decorated with an oval wreath of repoussé foliage around central cartouche, each engraved with a personal Coat of Arms oil on copper, a pair (2) h:9 w:7 d:2 cm Provenance: The Hall family of Yorkshire and by descent, possibly through the Dutch Loudon family Other Notes: The coats-of-arms on the silver cases cannot be positively identified. The engravers failed to show shading that would have indicated the tinctures. An attribution to Thomas Flatman (British, 1637-1688) has been suggested.

          8 o (183 x 113 mm). Collation : A 8 (a)-(b) 8 B-S 8 T 4. Engraved portrait frontispiece by R. White after J. Hayls. (Dedication leaf with repaired tear, A8 with tear crossing text, small burn hole on H8 touching a few letters, without blank A1.) Contemporary panelled and sprinkled calf, red sprinkled edges (joints splitting slightly at head). Provenance : Thomas Belayse, Viscount Fauconberg (armorial bookplate) -- John Hayward, sold Sotheby's, London, 14 March 1966, lot 162, to F. Hollings -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 17 April 1969. Exhibited : National Book League, London, Hayward's Descriptive Catalogue, 1947, no. 131. Fourth edition. Scholar of Winchester, and scholar and fellow of New College, Thomas Flatman has been long esteemed as a miniature painter, but he was also a poet. This is the most complete edition of the Poems and Songs, which were first collected in 1674. Only the third and fourth editions contain the frontispiece. Grolier Wither to Prior 359 (wrongly calling for 8 rather than 4 leaves in the final quire T); Wing F1154.
