He was one of Canada’s most renowned scholars on Goethe, a writer who, among other things, wrote about the complexities of the human spirit. It seems inevitable that Fairley was drawn to portraiture. Through the course of his half century of painting (he lived to be 99), Fairley sought the essential makings of humanness, what he called “the human outlook” through his art, painting everyone he knew, children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends, colleagues as well as strangers.Trio, which depicts the wife and two daughters of artist Aba Bayefsky (see lot 31), were among his circle of friends.  Estimate: $7,000–9,000

Something by which a face becomes humane and reflects on humanity. When it does happen that way, it happens because of the visual freedom I give myself.” While this portrait, like others we have offered by Barker Fairley, is titled and represents a specific person as opposed to an archetype, it seems evident that he was looking for something of the universal in this picture rather than the specific. Here, Ellen Adams, appears as “woman.” No backdrop situates her, no prop gives us a clue to her proclivities, personality or vocation. Rather she is rendered as timeless as a Greek kore. Estimate: $3,000–4,000

I painted it years ago and have looked at it frequently since, but only now do I begin to see the light. I remember saying suddenly to myself that if a familiar friend of Paul’s were walking up to the picture, he would say that this was Paul long before he was near enough to identify the features, because in a very special way the whole thing is Paul...”

Fairley left his position at the University of Jena to join the University of Alberta in 1910. After five years out west, Fairley came to Toronto in 1915 to a post at the University of Toronto where he remained until his retirement in 1957. The scholar of German literature, an avid lover of the works of Goethe, was also a staunch promoter of Canadian art. He had a particular fondness for the Group of Seven, accompanying them on a number of their expeditions and frequently defending them against criticism. Barker Fairley himself came to painting at the age of 45. Barker Fairley’s paintings are intimate and lyrical. Subjects are purposefully distorted to reflect the emotion, the humanity, behind the sitter or the setting. He strips away pretenses through his use of a restricted palette – blacks, blues, yellows and earthly shades – subtle tonal differences and clean lines. He often worked quite quickly, finishing portraits the day he began them and executing sketches outdoors to be painted on board in the studio soon afterward.Through Fairley’s landscapes, we quickly learn that the Canadian landscape is not restricted to the northern wilderness. Reflecting on his work at the age of 93, Fairley asserted that, “There’s just as much to paint near home as further away.” The artist was keenly familiar with the neighbourhood, the suburb, depicted in this lot. A listing of the Arts and Letters Club Membership from 1917 shows at least one of his fellow club members as living on Dawlish Avenue (Fairley was living on McMaster Avenue at the time). Several years later we can confirm through the 1926-1927 University of Toronto Academic Calendar that Fairley himself had established a residence at 197 Dawlish Avenue. See Lot 87 for a portrait of Paul Sweetman.

And if he was on, two hours later a vibrant human soul stripped of all artificiality looked forth from the painting board with eternal and often disturbing clarity."
