Barker Fairley 1887 - 1986 Canadian oil on board Buxton
12 x 15 inches 30.5 x 38.1 centimeters signed and on verso signed, titled, dated 1935 and inscribed "property of Nan Fairley" Provenance:Marianne Friedland Gallery, Toronto Private Collection, Toronto Barker Fairley, a celebrated scholar of German literature, joined that department at the University of Toronto in 1915. His close friendship with J.E.H .MacDonald and other members of the Group of Seven, nurtured by membership in the Arts and Letters Club, led to him being acknowledged as a perceptive and enthusiastic art critic. He began to produce his own paintings in 1931 and continued to paint while teaching at the University of Manchester from 1932 to 1936. While there he lived in Buxton, the subject of this rare early work.
The painting is accompanied by a copy of the 1980 limited edition monograph, Barker Fairley, signed by the artist and the author, Paul Duval. The book is in its original slipcase, editioned 16/300 and includes two signed and numbered lithographs.
