    FAGEL Léon (1851-1913) "Le tambour de Wattignies" Sujet en bronze patiné, signé sur la base ; Fonte d'édition ancienne avec marque "Susse Fres. Edts. Paris" et cachets ronds Haut.: 57,5 cm Premier Grand Prix de Rome en 1879 avec son oeuvre "Tobie rendant la vue à son père", Fagel va exposer au Salon des artistes français de 1878 à 1893, puis à la Société nationale des beaux-arts de 1895 à 1911. Sa production comprend de nombreuses commandes de l'Etat, aussi bien pour des monuments de Paris que pour des villes du Nord. Notre épreuve, réduction du monument de la ville d'Avesnes-sur-Helpe représente un jeune tambour qui s’engage au 89ème d’infanterie, comme simple « tapin » à l'âge de 14 ans. L'épisode héroïque des 15 et 16 Octobre 1793 est rapporté par Jules Michelet dans son livre paru en 1853 « Histoire de la Révolution Française » : « Quatre heures durant, au centre, en montant vers Dourlers, nos troupes, et Jourdan en personne, combattirent à la baïonnette. Du premier choc, tous les corps de l’ennemi avaient été renversés. Les nôtres arrivent essoufflés au pied des hauteurs, ils se trouvent face à face avec les canons, souffletés de mitraille. Quelques-uns ne s’arrêtèrent pas ; un tambour de quinze ans, trouvant un trou, passa, s’alla poster dans le village de Dourlers, sur la place de l’église, et là battit la charge derrière les Autrichiens ; leurs bataillons en perdirent contenance, et ils commençaient à se disperser... En 1837, on a retrouvé là les os du petit homme entre sept grenadiers hongrois. »
