PROVENANCE: Property from Cliveden, a National Trust Historic Site. The larger than life size figure is now part of the collection fo the Philadelphia History Museum. This watercolor may be a sketch of the Grenadier used as the frontispiece in the 1902 publication of Sally Wister's Journal. Hermann Faber was born in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1854. During the Civil War he served the Surgeon General as a medical illustrator. He famously made two sketches of Abraham Lincoln on his deathbed.
