Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, 2003, Cullercoats - A North East Colony Of Artists. Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, Cornwall, Painting At The Edge - Britain's Coastal Colonies, 1880-1930. In both of the above exhibitions the painting was featured in the exhibition books authored by Laura Newton. Newport Museum & Art Gallery, on public view, 2006; From 2007 till the present time this painting has been on loan to the National Trust at Cragside House, Rothbury, Northumberland. NB Reference to this picture is made in the Historical Notes on Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and Monkseaton by William Weaver Thomlinson. The two women in this painting were regular sitters for the artist, Meggy Arthur and an elderly Betty Donkin. They are depicted waiting on the beach for the return of the fishing fleet, with the village of Cullercoats in the background. Emmerson had moved to Cullercoats around 1865 and he retained a home there for the rest of his life painting studies of the harbour and the daily life of the fisherfolk. He exhibited at the Royal Academy until two years short of his death showing a total of fifty eight works, including several Cullercoats character studies similar to this. See illustration

Very fine, pressed craquelure throughout; slightly yellowed varnish. NOTES Emmerson studied in Newcastle with William Bell Scott and maintained a lifelong connection with the North East of England, where his work held great repute, and still hangs in both national and private collections.

      A Hexham Measure signed and dated 'H.H Emmerson/1871' (lower left) oil on canvas 37 x 73 1/8in. (94 x 185.7cm.) NOTES Emmerson was born at Chester le Street, County Durham, and having studied at Newcastle under William Bell Scott, lived in Northumberland all his life, variously at Ebchester, Bywell, Whickham, Morpeth and Cullercoats. He derived his subject matter almost exclusively from his native county, and exhibited 54 pictures at the Royal Academy between 1851 and 1893. He enjoyed a great reputation in the north east, and many of his pictures entered family collections there. One of his patrons was the first Lord Armstrong, whose portrait he painted seated in the dining room inglenook at Cragside.
