Sir William Eden (British, 1849-1915) St John's Wood, London oil on board,

      Est: £300 - £400

Sir William Eden (British, 1849-1915) St John's Wood, London oil on board, inscribed in pencil on reverse by Mrs Clarissa Eden (Spencer-Churchill), the daughter in law of the artist and the wife of Sir Anthony Eden "St John's Wood W. Eden about 1895), late 19th century wooden and partially gilded frame 9 ¼ x 14 ¼in. (23.5 x 36.25cm.) * Notes: The artist, William Eden, was the father of the British Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden. In 1892 he commissioned Whistler to paint a portrait of his wife, Lady Eden. Unwisely, Eden disputed the price after the portrait was completed which ended up in the press followed by court proceedings in Paris in 1895. Eden won the suit but Whistler destroyed the painting and in 1899 published Eden versus Whistler: The Baronet and the Butterfly. A Valentine with a Verdict which set out to destroy Eden's reputation.
