Gaetano Dura (1805 Cassano Jonio (Cosenza) - 1878 Naples): Ascent to Vesuvius, c. 1857, Lithography Technique: Hand colored Lithography on Paper Inscription: Middle right signed in the printing plate: "Gae Dura". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Lit. Gatti e Dura / Salita al Vesuvio". Unknown collection stamp on verso Date: c. 1857 Description: After Gaetano Dura and the lithographer Federico Gatti published the album Tarantella. Ballo napoletano, in which the exact sequence of the famous dance is depicted, the collaboration between the two intensified in 1835 with the founding of a joint lithography studio, which was soon to become one of the most important graphic institutions in Naples. Dura had made a name for himself particularly with portrait and landscape lithographs, but was also not averse to humour, as the theatre texts and comedies he wrote prove. Our caricature shows that he also knew how to give form to pictorial humour. At the same time, the sheet is a fine cultural-historical document, as it clearly shows how much Vesuvius had become an everyday tourist destination. Little has remained of the majestic grandeur of the 'mountain of fire'. The ascent has become a business. The ascent is still arduous, but the 'weight' of the effort has shifted. Gaetano Dura (1805-78) was a Neapolitan sketch artist and lithographer who began as a landscape artist and lithographer and quickly rose to prominence as one of the first Neapolitan masters of the relatively new artistic medium. His illustrations of Neapolitan theatrical and street scenes are now regarded as unparalleled depictions of local life.

Ein elegant gekleideter Herr mit Zylinder, unterstützt von vier Männern, müht sich, eine beleibte Dame im ausladenden Kleid den Vesuv hinaufzuziehen. Die amüsante Karikatur Gaetano Duras ist ein kulturhistorisches Dokument, zeigt es uns doch auf humorvolle Weise wie der Vesuv Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Ziel der Alltagstouristen geworden ist. Beschwerlich war der Anstieg auf den Gipfel des Vesuv schon immer, die letzten steilen Meter über Geröll und Steine muss man auch noch heute absolvieren, um das atemberaubende Panorama über den Golf und Neapel zu genießen. - Prachtvoller, farbfrischer Druck mit Rand.
