SIX ORDER DOCUMENTS OF REAR ADMIRAL JOHN A. DAHLGREN AND REAR ADMIRAL DUPONT PERTAINING TO THE CHARLESTON BLOCKADE

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren (1809-1870). In February of 1863 Dahlgren was promoted to Rear Admiral and took command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. This lot includes: 1) Three page 13-1/2" x 8-1/2" order titled "Order of Battle and Plan of Attack Upon Charleston, S.C." dated April 5, 1863 and signed "S.F. DuPont" Rear Admiral Commanding, South Atlantic Blockade Squadron. This plan was enacted on April 7, 1863. Unfortunately, the nine ironclads were unable to navigate properly in the obstructed channels leading to the harbor. His ships were caught in a blistering crossfire, and he withdrew. Five of the ironclads were disabled and one sank. This was partly the cause of his being relieved of his command at his own request on July 5, 1863. 2) 9-3/4" x 8" letter dated July 15, 1863 from "Flag Stmr Augusta Dinsmore/Off Maris Island (Dahlgren used the Dinsmore as his flagship from June 30, 1863 to July 17, 1863) The order is addressed to "The Senior Officer Present Off Charleston Bar". He informs the senior officer that if the "enemy's ironclads" come out and attack our wooden vessels the vessel which observes their approach should show three rockets in rapid succession. At that point one of the monitors will be towed out at once to engage. Signed "J.A. Dahlgren" as Rear Admiral Commanding, S.A.B. Squadron. 3) 9-3/4" x 8" on blue-lined paper an order from the Flag Steamer Dinsmore July 21, 1863 signed "J.A. Dahlgren" as Rear Admiral Commanding, S.A.B. Squadron. This order directed to the Senior Officer outside the bar, informs him that the Confederate Steamer Sumter has left Liverpool and is headed our way and most likely headed to Fort Sumter with supplies of heavy ordnance. Dahlgren directs "for the capture of this vessel, and no effort should be spared to this end". 4) A 12-3/4" x 8" blue sheet titled "Order for Friday - 14th August 1863". Dahlgren announces that in a joint operation with General Gillmore "commencing today" the Passaic and the Patapsco will take positions off Fort Sumter and the other monitors will close on Fort Wagner and then advance along the beach towards Fort Gregg. 5) 8" x 5" two page letter written from the "Philadelphia" February 5, 1864. The page and a half letter concerns the plight of Lieutenant Commander Eastman. 6) 9-3/4" x 8" one page order written on blue-lined paper from the "Flag Steamer Philadelphia/Off Morris Island" February 5, 1864 signed "J.A. Dahlgren" as Rear Admiral Commanding, S.A.B. Squadron. The order is for marines from four different vessels to be sent on board the South Carolina. SIZE: As noted above. CONDITION: Very good. 9-25311

    • Scarce Antique Hanes Excelsior Impact Grenade and a DuPont Grenade Cap Tin
      Apr. 22, 2012

Scarce Antique Hanes Excelsior Impact Grenade and a DuPont Grenade Cap Tin

      Est: $2,500 - $3,500

      1) Patented in 1862, the Hanes Excelsior consists of a central ball, ringed with 14 percussion caps and filled with the explosive payload, which is then enclosed in a spherical case. Upon striking the ground, one or more primers are crushed between the ball and case, detonating the explosives. Due to the complete lack of safety devices, using the Excelsior was something of an adventure, and production was limited. 2) Tin box, measuring 2 1/2 x 2 x 1 1/2 inches, with a paper label on the lid marked "100/Du PONT SPECIAL/HAND GRENADE/CAPS". BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Condition: 1) Very good, showing a mixed brown patina overall, with some spotting and dings on the outer case. The ball and the caps have been drilled out, otherwise they are good with some mild dents. 2) Good, with some rust on the box, and some staining and minor flakes on the label.
