D. was pupil of I. Pils and a close friend of E. Manet. His pleasing motifs in a stly between academical realism and impressionism secured him an early and lasting succes. Ernest Ange Duez 1843-1896 French Oil on canvas, painted circa 1885. 'An Elegant Woman seated at Villerville Beach' Signed lower right. 18 x 21 in. Framed. As depicted to the left of frame, in the only known photograph of Ernest Duez working in his Paris studio. A close friend and neighbour of John Singer Sargent in Paris, Duez is best known for his accomplished coastal views and promenading figures. Much of his time was spent in Villerville in Normandy. Ernest Ange Duez (French, 1843-1896) Three scenes from the life of St. Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne coloured chalks triptych, in an oak and parcel gilt triple-arched frame 61 x 122 cm (24 x 48 in) overall Note: The finished work for which these are studies is now in the Musee d'Orsay. It was described in 1879 as 'a masterpiece of modern art' and bought by the French state for the Musee du Luxembourg, Paris. The scenery in the central panel is based on Villerville in Normandy rather than North-east England.
