Die Erziehung der Jungfrau: Anna und Maria im Innenhof eines Capreser Hauses. Aquarell auf Karton, verso: Bleistiftstudien. 55,8 x 37,8 cm (Darstellung); 63,5 x 48 cm (Blattgröße). Unten rechts signiert "G. Dubufe. 1890.", unten links mit dem ligierten Monogramm "DD", oberhalb der Darstellung betitelt "L'Education de la Vierge.", sowie rechts unterhalb der Darstellung nochmals signiert "G. Dubufe fils" sowie mit Orts- und Datumsangaben "Capri - 1890. Paris - 1891.". Guillaume Dubufe lernte bei seinem Vater Eduard Dubufe und später bei Alexis Joseph Mazerolle. Er widmete sich sowohl religiösen, mythologischen als auch allegorischen Sujets, die in ihrer Auffassung oft vom Symbolismus geprägt waren. Ab 1886 verbrachte Dubufe immer wieder längere Phasen auf Capri, wo die Familie eine größere Villa in Anacapri besaß. Dort schuf Dubufe in den Jahren von 1888 bis 1890 eine Folge von großformatigen Gemälden zum Leben der Jungfrau Maria. Eines dieser Gemälde "La Maison de la Vierge" aus dem Jahr 1890 befindet sich im Musée d'Orsay in Paris und gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Kompositionen des Künstlers. Das vorliegende Aquarell dürfte als Vorstudie für ein weiteres Gemälde dieser Suite gedient haben. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Edouard-Marie-Guillaume Dubufe (French, 1853-1909) Portrait of Mrs Harry Vane Milbank, née Alice Sidonie Van den Bergh signed and dated 'Edouard Dubufe 1874' (lower left) oil on canvas, unframed 218 x 133cm (85 13/16 x 52 3/8in). Provenance: From the sitter to her son, Albert de Belleroche (French 1864-1944). Thence by descent to the present owner. The present lot portrays Alice Sidonie Van den Berg, daughter of Desire Baruch of Brussels, and a prominent socialite in London and Paris. Alice hosted great parties in both cities and was a good friend of both the Impératrice Eugénie, Napoleon 3rd's wife, in Paris and the Marquess of Queensberry in London. Described as having an 'almost legendary beauty', Alice's first marriage, to Edmund Charles, Marquis de Belleroche produced a son Albert, who went on to become a celebrated painter. But the marriage ended unhappily, and in 1871, Alice married Harry Vane Milbank, the nephew and heir-to-be of the Duke of Cleveland and a celebrated duellist, huntsman and adventurer; he was also an inveterate gambler. The family moved to Paris, where many great writers and artists were frequent visitors to Alice's salons, notably the writer and humourist Oscar Wilde and the great American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925).

Über- bzw. unterhalb der Darstellung betitelt und bezeichnet "II" bzw. nochmals signiert, zweifach datiert und ortsbezeichnet "Capri 1890/Paris 1891" sowie von fremder Hand bezeichnet. Auf Karton. 56 x 38 cm. Leicht stockfleckig. Ränder etwas angestaubt und bestoßen. Dubufe bevorzugte in seinem Werk neben Portraits vor allem religiöse und symbolistische Sujets sowie Ansichten von Capri, wo er ab 1886 regelmäßig aufhielt. Guillaume Dubufe (parfois orthographié Dubuffe) est un peintre, décorateur et scultpeur français, fils et petit-fils de peintres, neveu de Charles Gounod. Il réalisa, entre autre, en 1885, le plafond du foyer de la Comédie-Française. La très chère Tante Nelly Bunel (1848-1887), guère plus âgée que lui, est l'épouse de son oncle, l'architecte et peintre Paul Dubufe (1842-1898). La famille de cette dernière est propriétaire de l'Abbaye de La Lucerne d'Outremer, dans la Manche, où le couple s'établit. L'envoi mystérieux au dos de la photographie laisse présager de doux souvenirs...
