The painting has been relined. Examined under UV light some spots of overpainting are visible to darker areas of the sky and shore. In some areas the weave of the canvas is fluorescing and it is difficult to determine if there is further overpaint due to previous applications of varnish and cleaning. The painting presently has a varnish layer which is clear and glossy. The back of the work is boxed and is not visible.

Hendrick Jacobsz Dubbels, 1621 Amsterdam - 1707 ebenda

      Est: €15,000 - €25,000

Hendrick Jacobsz Dubbels, 1621 Amsterdam - 1707 ebenda SEESTÜCK Öl auf Leinwand. 38,5 x 57 cm. Mittig Reste einer Signatur. Gerahmt. Beiliegend ein Gutachten von Zimmermann, Berlin 3. Mai 1957. Rest. (1020961) (12) Hendricks Jacobsz Dubbels, 1621 Amsterdam - 1707 Amsterdam SEASCAPE Oil on canvas. 38.5 x 57 cm. Remains of a signature at centre. Framed. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Zimmermann dated Berlin, 3 May 1957. The seascape depicts a vast expanse of glassy sea, with numerous ships anchored at low tide. As is typical for the artist, a high, overcast sky with low-lying horizon stretches out above the ships. Dubbels, who lived in Amsterdam all his life, worked in the studio of Simon de Vlieger (1601 - 1653) in the early 1650s. But his works were also influenced by Jan van de Cappelle and both van de Veldes. Works by the artist are held at the National Gallery and the National Maritime Museum in London, the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, the Prado in Madrid et al. Restored.

Peint (no date); With Goudstikker, Amsterdam, before 1930; Princess Gleb Scherbatoff, by whom given to the present owner. LITERATURE U. Middendorf, Hendrick Jacobz. Dubbels (1621-1707), Freren 1989, pp. 33, 45, 51, 127, cat. no. 64, reproduced. NOTE The attribution to Hendrickz. Jacob Dubbels was first proposed by H. Gerson and confirmed by Ulrike Middendorf, who dates this painting after 1670 (on the apparent basis of an old photograph; see Literature). This is one of several re-workings by Dubbels of a compositon that he probably first explored in circa 1655-8 in an unsigned (it bears a false Van de Cappelle signature) and undated picture in Rotterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen (see Middendorf, op. cit., p. 117, no. 42*, reproduced facing page). The same elements of the composition are all present here, apart from the Man O' War in the centre middleground of the Rotterdam picture, but they are all altered, and the mood is different, so that in the present work the lit sail of the nearest small vessel is set against the grey lowering cloud.
