Notes

When writing her catalogue raisonné of the artist in 1989 (op. cit.), Dr Ulrich Middendorf only knew the present picture through a black and white photograph in Margareta Russell's book on Jan van de Cappelle (op. cit.). Middendorf has since confirmed the attribution to Dubbels on the basis of more recent photographs, noting that the present picture dates to 1658-60, the artist's middle and best period.
