ALFRED DRURY (1856-1944), A PAIR OF BRONZE FEMALE FIGURES OF DRAMA AND LITERATURE

          Est: £3,000 - £5,000

ALFRED DRURY (1856-1944), A PAIR OF BRONZE FEMALE FIGURES OF DRAMA AND LITERATURECIRCA 1900-1908Modelled as opposing forms, one holding a mask emblematic of theatre and the dramatic arts, inscribed 'A Drury 08', 25cm high, the other a book possibly emblematic of literature and a wreath, inscribed 'A Drury', both on green marble bases24cm highProvenance: The Private Collection of Sir David and Lady Scholey (Edward) Alfred Briscoe Drury was part of the New Sculpture Movement opposing the prevailing 'frozen' neoclassical style of sculpture with naturalistic realism. Training at the Oxford School of Art and the National Art Training School (now the Royal Academy), Drury then learnt from the French Masters including Dalou in Paris before returning to England in 1885 when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy. Drury was commissioned to make numerous public works including the figure of Prince Albert above the Main Entrance of the Victoria and Albert Museum, circa 1909 and allegorical bronzes for Vauxhall Bridge, London in 1905. In 1901 Spielmann wrote in British Sculpture and the Sculptors of Today 'Drury is among the most personal of our sculptors, always in search of the graceful, the tender, the placid and the harmonious'. To date these figures would seem to be unrecorded in Drury's raisonné. Some of his work, such as a set of terracotta spandrels for a coachmaker in Hammersmith, have been lost or destroyed. It is possible that this pair, a common thematic approach in his work with opposing female figures emblematic of virtues or the arts, were for a commission now lost.

ALFRED DRURY A.R.A. R.I. (BRITISH, 1856-1944): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED BOY, DATED 1919

          Est: £1,200 - £1,800

ALFRED DRURY A.R.A. R.I. (BRITISH, 1856-1944): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A  SEATED BOY, DATED 1919 seated on a rocky, naturalistic base and drying his right foot, the back of the base signed 'A. Drury 1919', raised on the original green marble plinth, the bronze 25cm high, 31.5cm high overall  Marion Harry Spielmann summed up Drury's enduring qualities perfectly when writing of the sculptor in 1901 when she wrote 'Mr. Drury is among the most personal of our sculptors, always in search of the graceful, the tender, the placid, and the harmonious'. He first discovered his love for sculpture as a choir boy at New College, Oxford after seeing Chantry's works. This inspired him to attend art school in Oxford before joining the National Art Training School, where he studied under the ground-breaking French sculptor Jules Dalou. Dalou was so impressed by his young student that when he returned to France he took Drury with him to work in his studio for the next four years. Upon Drury's return to England, he joined the studio of another famous sculptor, Sir Edgar Boehm, who was a favourite of Queen Victoria.  In 1885 he sent his first contribution to the Royal Academy, a group in terracotta entitled 'The Triumph of Silenus', but it was not until the following year when he exhibited his ideal busts at the RA that he achieved great popular success. Now considered to be a key member of the New Sculpture group of artists, his work is still well sought after; and unlike many of the mass produced bronze sculptures that were made in France during this period, his lost wax cast bronzes were not made in large quantities and come to auction relatively rarely. ALFRED DRURY BRITISH, 1856-1944 A MOTHER AND CHILD

          Est: £4,000 - £6,000

signed and dated: A. DRURY 1919 bronze, varied green-brown patina, on a veined green marble base CATALOGUE NOTE Drury explored the theme of Mother and Child on several occasions, most famously in his terracotta First Lesson in the Birmingham City Art Gallery. That sculpture was in homage to his French master, Dalou. The present model vividly contrasts with the First Lesson. The nude serpentine form of the mother is more indebted to Michelangelo than Dalou and the feeling of the bronze is far removed from the sweet sentimentality which characterised the terracotta.

ALFRED DRURY (BRITISH, 1859-1944) THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

          Est: -

Signed A. Drury Bronze, rich brown patination, on shallow shaped green marble base 41 cm (16 in) Drury exhibited a bronze Age of Innocence at the Royal Academy in 1897. The unusual truncation of the bust and the full sleeved dress, inspired by Renaissance sculpture, relate to his bust of Griselda, shown at the Royal Academy in the previous year. Beattie describes them as mood portraits of the type established by Gilbert in his Study of 1883 (Beattie op. cit p. 174). The model for the Age of Innocence was Gracie Doncaster, whose sister Clarrie modelled for the faces of Morning and Evening, Leeds, City Square.
