Item Overview

Description

signed and dated: A. DRURY 1919

bronze, varied green-brown patina, on a veined green marble base

CATALOGUE NOTE

Drury explored the theme of Mother and Child on several occasions, most famously in his terracotta First Lesson in the Birmingham City Art Gallery. That sculpture was in homage to his French master, Dalou. The present model vividly contrasts with the First Lesson. The nude serpentine form of the mother is more indebted to Michelangelo than Dalou and the feeling of the bronze is far removed from the sweet sentimentality which characterised the terracotta.
