      Jan Dickhoff (1911-1942), Chinese fantasy figures, signed and dated 'Jan '35 / Dickhoff' (lower left); with label of 'N.V. Mij. Vorkink, Bandoeng' (attached to the reverse), mixed media on paper, 44,5x30,5 cm, Jan Felix Dickhoff (Surabaya, Indonesia 1911 - Rangoon, Birma 1942) was a water colourist, graphic designer, illustrator, pen artist and draftsman who was largely influenced creatively by the 1930's. The period of the 1930's is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies.

Drawing, pen and ink and watercolour, varnished, 47,4x33,7 cm., signed "Jan Dickhoff" and "'36" in pen, tipped onto mount w. upper corners. - Part of varnish w. craquelé. = Haks/ Maris p.73: "Born in Surabaja, 18 December 1911. The artist came to the Netherlands to become a pupil of the academy of arts in The Hague. He returned to Indonesia in 1935. Illustrator, draughtsman and watercolourist in a realistic style, tending towards symbolism. (...) During World War II he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese and was sent to a camp in Burma.
