PORTRAIT EINES ALTEN MANNES Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 46 x 37 cm. Mittig links signiert „Denner fec.“ In dekorativem Rahmen. Halbbildnis eines großen schlanken alten Mannes nach rechts, in schlichter grauer Kleidung mit weißem Hemd. Er hat seine linke Hand auf die Brust gelegt, während die Rechte auf einem leicht beschädigten kleinen Buch ruht. Meisterlich ausgeführt das feine Gesicht mit zartem Schimmer, kleinsten, deutlich erkennbaren Falten, tiefliegenden Augen, leicht glänzend seitlich aus dem Bild herausblickend. Dazu lichtes dünnes graues Haar und einen leichten Bart. Im Hintergrund rechts der Blick in eine Landschaft mit Bäumen, im warmen Licht der untergehenden Sonne. Minimale Retuschen. Anmerkung: Der Künstler malte neben Portraits auch gerne Bildnisse alter Menschen; es sind meist keine Portraits im engeren Sinne, sonder Versinnbildlichung der Schönheit und der Würde des Alters. Bemerkenswert an diesem Portrait - entstanden kurz nach ihrer Vermählung - ist das äußerst wertvolle Diamanthalsband und die nach dem Vorbild der neuesten Pariser Mode angefertigte schulterfreie Robe mit einem mit Hermelin gefütterten roten Cape. Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 12,000 Euro Balthasar Denner was highly appreciated as a portraitist and used to paint with great artistic finesse and impressive attention to detail. Accordingly, coiffures and beards of his sitters are often executed with the finest brush strokes, whereas the background is rendered in a sfumato light. This present work shows an old hermit in a praying position and bears witness to a brilliant painting quality. The motif corresponds to the preference of the artist to depict aged males on his canvases. Condition: The work is in good condition, consistent with age. The paint surface has an evenly spread craquelure and reveals light pressure marks, due to the underlying stretcher. There is a tiny loss of paint at the sitter’s left index finger. A canvas tear of approximately 3.5 cm has been professionally restored and retouched at the lower left corner. The stretcher measures 76.5 x 63.5 cm and the frame 88.5 x 76 cm. Balthasar Denner (1685-1749) At the age of eight Balthasar Denner already demonstrated his talent as an artist. After an accident, he passed the time of his recovery with drawing. A few years later he was trained by the Dutch painter Franz van Amama, and in Gdansk Denner received an education in oil painting. Even whilst working as a merchant, he devoted his leisure time to painting. In 1707 he was admitted to the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. Soon he received his first significant commissions. A large painting for the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp established Denner as a gifted portrait painter. Thus he continuously received commissions from the courts of Europe, frequently travelling across Germany as well as to Amsterdam, Copenhagen and London. During his lifetime, Balthasar Denner was one of the most sought-after portrait painters in northern Europe and highly valued for his meticulous execution. Sophie Charlotte zu Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Mirow 1744- 1818 Kew Palace, Richmond) war eine deutsche Prinzessin, die 1761 durch die Heirat mit König Georg III. als Königin Charlotte zur Königin von Großbritannien und von Irland sowie Kurfürstin von Braunschweig-Lüneburg und später Königin von Hannover wurde. Bemerkenswert an diesem Portrait - entstanden kurz nach ihrer Vermählung - ist das äußerst wertvolle Diamanthalsband und die nach dem Vorbild der neuesten Pariser Mode angefertigte schulterfreie Robe mit einem mit Hermelin gefütterten roten Cape. Balthasar Denner Hamburg 1685 - Rostock 1749 , Portrait of a Lady, Oil/copper, 42 x 32 cm., German portrait a. miniature painter. Little is known about D.s training. He had drawing lessons in Hamburg, since 1707 he worked as painter at the Berlin academy. Being extraordinarily talented he soon received commisions, first from the court of Holstein, since 1717 also from the Royal Danish court. In Hannover he met members of the English court a. followed their invitation to London in 1721. He returned to Hamburg in 1728 but soon began travelling around again to the courts where he received commissions. After a longer sojourn in Amsterdam he painted the future tsar Peter III. in Hamburg in 1740. Working in the tradition of Leiden painting school D. was one of the best a. most sought-after portrait painter of the rococo.

Oil on panel Presumably Germany, 19th century Classical Biedermeier framing Dimensions: each 13 x 9.5 cm Good condition Small-sized portraits painted in the style of Balthasar Denner (1685-1749) The present paintings reveal the portraits of two bearded men against a dark neutral background. The works were presumably painted by an artist active in Germany in the 19th century. His style seems deeply related to Balthasar Denner, who was specialized in portrait painting, while he usually asked other painters to finish parts such as the bodies and clothes of his sitters, as well as the background. In this respect, the present pair clearly follows the tradition of focusing on the depiction of the face, whereas the rest appears only indicated by a few undefined lines and dark shades. The portraits are in good condition considering the age. The paint surfaces are slightly rubbed, especially due to the framing. One portrait shows a fine scratch at the height of the sitter's collar, whereas the other work reveals a small pin hole at the upper edge. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching. The frames are also in good condition with only small trades of age and use. Each panel measures 13 x 9.5 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 15.5 x 12 cm.
