§ Melita Denaro (Irish 1950-) Maybe my last few days in her company and the larks singing and soaring ahead oil on board 15 x 18.5cm Footnote: North of Inishowen, on the north coast of County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland, lies the Isle of Doagh. The childhood home of artist, Melita Denaro, the wild and tempestuous landscape of Doagh, where cerulean Atlantic tides thrash against unforgiving rocky outcrops, has been instrumental in defining the profile of her work. Born in 1950 to Maltese and Irish parents, Denaro received her early training in London, at the Central School of Art and Design, between 1975 and 1978. It was not until she reached her forties, however, that Denaro began to seriously pursue a career as a painter. In 1992, Denaro became the oldest student to be accepted to the Royal Academy. Despite having been diagnosed with MS in 1996, and her condition having deteriorated to the point that she now requires a wheelchair to move around, Denaro, as she has done for the past 25 years, continues to make monthly pilgrimages from her home in London, to the Isle of Doagh. Typified by scudding, expressive strokes, Denaro’s ethereal landscapes are not only in dialogue with the turbulent conditions of the landscape, but, through their lyrical and enigmatic titles, also recall childhood memories of people, places, and conversations on the peninsula.
