      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Ernst Deger (German, 1809-1855) Christ blessing (self-portrait), 1859 Oil on canvas 23 x 18-1/2 inches (58.4 x 47.0 cm) Signed and dated upper right: ED [in ligature] EGER / 1859 PROVENANCE: Hargesheimer & Günther, Düsseldorf, Germany, September 17-19, 2015, lot 1609; Private collection, Chicago, Illinois, acquired from the above. Ernst Deger accompanied his Düsseldorf colleagues, Franz Ittenbach and the Müller brothers, on a sojourn to Italy from 1837 to 1841 to prepare for their execution of a large fresco cycle at St. Apollinaris in Remagen. On this trip, Deger was singled out by the head of the Nazarenes, Friedrich Overbeck, as an especially promising and religiously intense young artist. Overbeck appreciated Deger's direct and simple style, his rich and harmonious color, and powers of characterization. Indeed, in this work, Deger used his own likeness for the face of Christ. • Ernst Deger (German, 1809-1855) Regina Coeli: Virgin and Christ Child enthroned
      Dec. 08, 2022

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Ernst Deger (German, 1809-1855) Regina Coeli: Virgin and Christ Child enthroned in the clouds Oil on gessoed panel with incised gold background 20 x 12-1/2 inches (50.8 x 31.8 cm) Signed in the globe at bottom center: E. Deger PROVENANCE: Hargesheimer & Günther, Düsseldorf, Germany; Private collection, Chicago, Illinois. Considered the most prominent religious painter of the Düsseldorf School, Ernst Deger produced an altarpiece early in his career (1836-7) for the Church of St. Andreas in Dusseldorf showing Mary as the Queen of Heaven ( Regina Coeli) holding a lively Christ Child in her arms. It was enormously popular and was profusely illustrated in prayer books. This smaller devotional work relates to that esteemed altarpiece, showing Jesus as a toddler rather than an infant (which was unusual), but presenting Mary seated in clouds rather than standing, and holding a scepter. Later in his career, following the completion of a monumental chapel cycle commissioned by the Prussian King Frederick William IV at Stolzenfels Castle, Deger settled permanently in Düsseldorf, where he resumed his work in oil, and spent the rest of his life producing easel pictures, chiefly Madonnas. This moving composition by Ernst Deger became one of his best-known works, of which a number of versions are known. One version is in the Cathedral Museum of Hildesheim. It was popularized as an engraving by Joseph Keller (circa 1860-70), produced in the same orientation as the paintings. It was printed by Julius Becker and published by Julius Juddeus in Dusseldorf, by John Philip in London, and by Schulgen & Schwan in Paris. A copy of the engraving is preserved in The British Museum, London (1870,1210.342). HID01801242017

Ernst Deger, The Virgin as Queen of Heaven

      Est: €5,000 - €6,000

This depiction of the Virgin in a simultaneously majestic and contemplative aspect with the lively Christ child on her arm is a smaller replica of the large format altarpiece painted by Ernst Deger for the Church of St. Andrew in Düsseldorf which is among the most well-known works of the Düsseldorf School of painters. Deger was involved in the decoration of the important Gothic Revival style church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen and was also commissioned to decorate the chapel at Stolzenfels Castle by the Prussian King Frederick William IV. The present image appears to be housed in the original, arch-shaped frame.
