          Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), an Aesthetic Movement marble and painted mantel clock, with a gilt painted and enamelled pottery dial, inscribed 'Wassell & Halford 43 Fenchurch Street London', with further panels inscribed 'Night' and 'Shade' and 'Day's Eye', enclosing a twin fusee movement, striking the half-hour on a gong, with pendulum, 27cm wide 17.5cm deep 38cm high Condition Report: Movement seems free, striking when pushed. Some minor chips and knocks.

          An Aesthetic Movement walnut bracket clock, c.1870, the design attributed to Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), the case inset with painted ceramic panels in the manner of Walter Crane, the upper part of the case with a domed top, set with a dial painted with Arabic numerals, raised on column supports, the lower section with a central panel decorated with the Sphinx and the Pyramids at Giza opening to reveal the pendulum, with a half-dead-beat escapement movement, 32cm wide 19.5cm deep 49cm high Provenance: Sotheby's, April 30 1980; the Estate of Max Clendinning and Ralph Adron. Condition Report: With a crack to the cornice. The dial has been restored. The tiles with some fading. With general scuffs and marks to the frame.

          An Aesthetic Movement ebonised mantel clock, c.1880, attributed to Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), with a gilt-painted and enamelled ceramic dial, flanked to the corners with ceramic panels painted with foliate motifs, over a horizontal panel with the aforementioned motif, surmounted by a fret-cut cornice, 24cm wide 14cm deep 35cm high Provenance: The Estate of Max Clendinning and Ralph Adron, purchased from Camden Galleries, 18 Chalk Farm Road, on 15 March 1976. Condition Report: The dial surround with scuffs and marks. The tile inserts with some discolouration.

CIRC.662-1972 Note: Lewis Day was a teacher and prolific designer within the South Kensington circle, whose books frequently included Japanese examples. Although the design elements of this clock do not conform to traditional Japanese decoration, they would have suggested the Japanese taste to Day's contemporaries in Britain.
