      Half length, wearing a blue coat and a white satin waistcoat edged with gold, and lace collar and cuffs Inscribed l.l. with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, in a painted oval, in a carved wood frame 74 by 62 cm.; 29 1/4 by 24 1/2 in. The sitter was the son of John, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane (1696-1782) and his second wife, Arabella Pershall. On 26th September 1761 he married Willhelma daughter and co-heir of William Maxwell of Preston. PROVENANCE By descent from the sitter to John, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane, Taymouth Castle; Thence by descent to Lieutenant Colonel the Hon. Thomas Morgan-Grenville-Gavin, Langton, Duns, Berwickshire, his sale Christie's, 27th March 1925, lot 16 (with a portrait of Miss Hersee Gavin) bt. Baird for L37.16; Sir Henry Sutcliffe Smith, Ingerthorpe Grange, and thence by descent to the present owner.
