LOUIS B. DAVIS (BRITISH 1861-1941) Preview: Roslin Square Property from a Private collection LOUIS B. DAVIS (BRITISH 1861-1941) A study for a stained glass window, God saving Noah (The Ark - across 2 lights) for Cheltenham College Chapel black crayon/charcoal cartoons c1919-1921 60 x 18.5 cm (2, pair) design for a memorial window to Second-Lt H R Stables, killed in action, World War I, Two rows of four lights - reading left to right, upper row first: Louis B Davis was a notable English illustrator, watercolourist and stained glass artist and an active member of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It is for his stained glass that he is best remembered, a skill he learnt whilst studying under Christopher Whall. Davis designed and created a number of notable stained glass windows such as the First World War memorial window at Cheltenham College and the choir windows at Dunblane Abbey. Davis was an acquaintance of William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his work has a distinctly Pre-Raphelite character both in style and subject matter, indeed, the art historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner describes him as the last of the Pre-Raphelite artists.
