He lived to be 74, and died on June 2, 1869 in his hometown. For a comparable portrait by Davis, see Sotheby's, New York, 16 January 2003, lot 724. This piece exhibits a similar grainpainted table, rug with oval motif and calligraphy. Both pieces also portray the subject with disproportionately small feet which is characteristic of Davis' work

      UNSIGNED WORK OF JOSEPH H. DAVIS American, 1811-1865 "Joseph C. Wentworth. Aged 33 Years. and 10 months 1835 - Tryphena B. Wentworth. Aged 33 and 4 months 1835", depicting the couple seated at a painted table with painted floor. The entire image has been very carefully and accurately cut out in silhouette from the original paper and laid down upon a new sheet of paper. Strong colors, with superb multicolor surface to table and floor. Mr. Wentworth reads the Dover Gazette. A vase of flowers, two books, blank paper, and an inkwell with quill rest upon the table. Joseph Davis, a self-taught artist, was active in Dover, New Hampshire from 1832 to 1837. There are about 150 known images by him. Provenance: Descended in the consignor's family. Watercolor, 14 1/2" x 17 1/2". Walnut frame.
