Edward Thompson Davis (1833-1867) Edward Thompson Davis (1833-1867) 'Learning by Heart' oil on board 20 x 15cm Worcester-born Thompson Davis was a genre painter, who had studied at both the Birmingham School of Design and the Worcester School of Design. He went on to exhibit twenty works at the Royal Academy, but the majority of his work was via commissions for wealthy collectors, particularly those living in or near his native Worcester. In 1866, he travelled to Rome to study, but died there at the age of just 34 during a cholera outbreak. The artist’s limited output has meant he has not perhaps had the critical acclaim he deserves, but his technical skill and the sensitive handling of his subjects places him amongst the great Victorian artists. Provenance: The Manning Galleries Ltd., London [exhibited November 1971] (label on reverse); Sir John Clement Witt [L.2228b]; Thence by descent ⁂ A similar watercolour by Davis of Erme Mouth, Devon, can be found in the Eton College collection (see obj. no.: FDA-D.177-2010), which was purportedly from an album sold and dispersed by Colnaghi in 1951. The style and size would suggest that the present work may also have come from this album, or at least been executed during roughly the same period.

J. Davis, 1879; Anonymous sale, Christie's, 27th July 1951, lot 18 NOTE (an album) There is little biographical information on Edward Thompson Davis, but we know that he lived and worked in Worcester. An obituary in the 1867 Art Journal records that, having learnt to draw as a child in Worcester, he briefly enrolled at the Birmingham School of Art. He later returned to his home town and continued his studies for a further three years at the School of Design. His early drawings and oil paintings were apparantly much admired by his friends and clients in Worcester and 'testified to his excellent training and predilection for Art.' (Art Journal, 1867, p.188). Davis exhibited nineteen paintings of rustic genre subjects at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1876. Titles of exhibited pictures include A Drink at the Pump and On the Way to School. The Peg Top, which was sold at Christie's on 25th October 1991, lot 6, was displayed at the Royal Academy in 1867, the year of his death. It appears that most of these works, and indeed the designs included in the present album, were set in the streets or surrounding countryside of Worcester. Davis is known to have visited Italy at the end of his life. He died in Rome on 12th June 1867 where, according to his obituarist, he had been studying for some time. In 1951 the contents of another album of drawings by Edward Thompson Davis was sold by Colnaghi's. Various fine and detailed pencil, pen and ink drawings were taken from this album and now exist in the collections of Eton College and the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford

The Evening Lesson signed and dated 'E.Davis-1858' (lower right) and inscribed 'The Evening Lesson/Edward Davis/Northwick Worcester/no.2' (on an old label on the reverse) oil on panel 133/4 x 18 in. (34.9 x 45.7 cm.) EXHIBITION London, Royal Academy, 1858, no. 255. NOTES Despite the fact that he only exhibited nineteen pictures of rustic genre at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1867, Davis has a devoted following. His most ambitious work, Market Scene with a Performance of Punch, which depicts the High Street at Chipping Campden, was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 November 1999 (œ52,100), but his fame also rests on the merit of his drawings. Following the sale at Christie's of an album of these in 1951, and their subsequent dispersal by Colnaghi's, a number can be seen in distinguished collections, both public, and private, including those of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford, and Eton College. Davis trained at the Birmingham School of Design, at the same time as his exact contemporary Burne-Jones, but later returned to Worcester, where he spent much of his working life.
