including a view of cottages at Chipping Campden, Chipping Campden High Street, portrait of the artist's father, a bridge over a river thought to be the Severn, a coastal landscape, study of hands and studies for the oil 'Chipping Campden, with a Performance of Punch' (5 mounted as 1)

eleven (five mounted as one), nine signed, two inscribed with titles

six watercolour over pencil, two pen and brown ink over pencil, one pen and grey ink with grey wash over pencil, one pencil and one pen and brown ink and watercolour over pencil, one on blue paper

NOTE

The drawings included in the present lot of Chipping Campden, with a Performance of Punch are designs for Davis' oil of the same subject which was offered for sale in these Rooms on 9th June 1999, lot 41. Oil paintings by Davis are rare and the significance of Punch is indicated by his obituarist's reference to it in the Art Journal, 1867 at the head of a short list of the artist's best pictures (entitled: Market Scene, with a Performance of Punch). Another pen and ink study by the artist for his oil painting, Punch, was in the collection of John Baskett
