[REVOLUTIONARY WAR] -- [BOSTON TEA PARTY]. DAVIS, Amasa (1744-1825). Autograph letter signed by Amasa Davis ("Amasa Davis Agt"), as Agent for the Board of War, regarding the outfitting of the armed Brigantine Active. Boston [MA], 11 May 1779. Addressed "To The Honob. The Board Warr [sic]." 1p, 6 1/2 x 2 3/4 in. Message reads in full, "Gentlemen, I have to cause to be delivered to Mr. Ebenezer Batchelder for Brigg Active, Three Hundred of Iron." On 5 May 1779, Amasa Davis was commissioned Agent for the Board of War, and directed to superintend the outfitting of the armed brigantine Active, a British privateer captured by the Massachusetts brigantine Hazard two months earlier. Taken as a prize ship, the Active arrived in Boston in April 1779, and was outfitted for American service in the Continental Navy under the direction of Amasa Davis. General Amasa Davis was born in 1744 in Woodstock, CT, but his family later removed to Roxbury, Massachusetts. His older brother, Caleb Davis, was a member of the Sons of Liberty, while Amasa Davis was a participant in the December 1773 Boston Tea Party. During the Revolutionary War, Amasa Davis served as a quartermaster of one of the Boston regiments in the Continental Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. A merchant, he was also the quartermaster general for Massachusetts from 1787 to 1825. Davis died in 1825 and is buried at the Central Burying Ground in Boston. This lot is located in Cincinnati.

JEFFERSON DAVIS Interesting family content A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 2pp. 8vo., Memphis, Dec. 2, 1872 to a Mr. Bowman. In part: "...I know little of the case he presents and that little predisposes me against the justice of the claim. At the date given 1823 my Brother because of ill health and the purpose to engage in planting was winding up his business as a Lawyer, and soon thereafter, I do not know the date, the partnership of Reed & Davis was dissolved...I was then a schoolboy. You will understand my knowledge of such affairs was quite imperfect. The books of Reed & Grayson...would perhaps show the true character of the case...If the claim is a just one I have no hesitation as to paying it, but that must be shown before I can believe it to be so...". Expertly inlaid, a secretarial note at bottom, overall very good.

    • 1781 First Edition Book entitled "REVOLUTION DE L'AMERIQUE," by Abbé Raynal, Printed by Chez Lockier Davis, Holborn, London, Fine.
      Aug. 29, 2010

1781 First Edition Book entitled "REVOLUTION DE L'AMERIQUE," by Abbé Raynal, Printed by Chez Lockier Davis, Holborn, London, Fine.

      Est: $500 - $600

American Revolution 1781 First Edition Of "REVOLUTION DE L'AMERIQUE" 1781 First Edition Book entitled "REVOLUTION DE L'AMERIQUE," by Abbé Raynal, Printed by Chez Lockier Davis, Holborn, London, Fine. This important 18th century treatise was a highly informative work which contains an historical essay on the American Revolution. This is one of a few editions issued the first year 1781, some with, most without the frontispiece. The text is printed in French. Volume numbers 171-pages with separate [16-page] preliminaries; and measures approximately 8.75" tall x 5.5" wide x .75" thick. This rare book remains in quite good overall condition with typical issues of age. Raynal urged the Americans to found their liberty on constitutionalism, union, freedom of conscience, and the education of the people. The cover is well worn, spine tips chipped, spine cocked, page edges uncut, scattered light foxing, occasional minor damp staining, page edges uncut [as issued], and is generally clean internally. All in all, this desirable treatise remains very presentable. Abbé Guillaume Thomas François Raynal (1713-1796) was a noted French historian and philosopher. Raynal was a priest, but he was dismissed from his parish in Paris. He then turned to writing and sought the society and collaboration of the philosophes. Two historical works, one on the Netherlands (1747) and one on the English Parliament (1748), firmly established his reputation. Arguably his most important work, completed with the assistance of Denis Diderot, was a massive history of the European colonies in the Indies and Americas (1770). It was condemned by the Parlement of Paris (1781) for impiety and its dangerous ideas on the right of the people to revolt and to give or withhold consent to taxation. Nevertheless, the History was extremely popular, passing through many subsequent editions; the radical tone becoming more pronounced in later issues. Placed on the Index of the Roman Catholic Church in 1774, Raynal's book was burned and he was forced into exile in 1781. He was allowed to return to France, but not Paris, in 1784; his Parisian banishment was rescinded in 1790. Elected to the States General in 1789, he refused to serve and later advocated a constitutional monarchy.

      JEFFERSON DAVIS' DRAFT CALL

      Est: $500 - $700

JEFFERSON DAVIS' DRAFT CALL JAMES A. SEDDON 1815-1880) Confederate Secretary of War from 1862 until February 1865, when he was sacked because of his removal of Johnston at Atlanta. Important contemporary retained copy on C.S.A. War Department letterhead, 8pp. 4to., Richmond, June 6, 1863 to South Carolina Gov. Milledge Luke Bonham announcing Davis' call for 5,000 South Carolina troops. In small part: "...Under the instructions of the President, I have the honor to address you...The numerically superior armies of the enemy , confronting us in the field at all the most important points, render essential for success in our great struggle for liberty and independence greater concentration of our forces and their withdrawal in a measure from the purpose of local defense...Being the invaded country...it is impossible...to maintain...adequate forces at the numerous points where we may be attacked...reserves of our population...should be relied on for employment in the local defense...the Militia of the respective states might on occasion be called out, but this would be attended with the serious evil of being dilatory in execution...It may well be doubted whether at this stage of the war...the spirit of volunteering would be sufficiently eager and active...The President has therefore determined to make a requisition of the several States to furnish by an appointed time, for service within the State, and for a limited period of six months, a number of men proportionate to the relative population of each, unless the same [volunteer]...a draft will be made on all the militia...I am instructed by the President in his name to make on you a requisition for Five Thousand men...". Very good.

JEFFERSON DAVISFine association A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 2pp. 8vo., Montreal, May 26, 1881 to "Judge Tenn[e]y", a friend sent by his publishers to assist Davis in finishing his The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, published the same year. Here Davis appears to be writing concerning the publication of his work, in part: "...Last night I signed the assignment...& asked Mr. Davison[?] what was the exact meaning of 'valuable consideration' to which he could not make a specific answer...because of faith that Messrs. Appleton would [?] that my interest was fully protected; beyond the consideration of promoting a cheap edition. I am anxious to get home as soon as may be, and will hope for early intelligence as to when affairs here may be completed...The changes in temperature and exposure in travelling home afflicted me...". Moderate dampstains affects much of the letter (but not legibility nor signature), two numbers in date are ink-eroded, and one fold split has been archivally repaired; still, good content and overall good condition.
