Item Overview

Description

JEFFERSON DAVISFine association A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 2pp. 8vo., Montreal, May 26, 1881 to "Judge Tenn[e]y", a friend sent by his publishers to assist Davis in finishing his The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, published the same year. Here Davis appears to be writing concerning the publication of his work, in part: "...Last night I signed the assignment...& asked Mr. Davison[?] what was the exact meaning of 'valuable consideration' to which he could not make a specific answer...because of faith that Messrs. Appleton would [?] that my interest was fully protected; beyond the consideration of promoting a cheap edition. I am anxious to get home as soon as may be, and will hope for early intelligence as to when affairs here may be completed...The changes in temperature and exposure in travelling home afflicted me...". Moderate dampstains affects much of the letter (but not legibility nor signature), two numbers in date are ink-eroded, and one fold split has been archivally repaired; still, good content and overall good condition.
