Johann Adolph Darnstedt (1769 Auma - 1844 Dresden): Sculpture of Pan in Seifersdorf, 1792, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: 1792 Description: Proof before the signature and inscription in the lower margin and before the realisation of the entire sky and the completion of the foreground. The picture column, which no longer exists today, was located in the Seifersdorf valley and was intended to commemorate Salomon Gessner. Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker wrote: "The whole thing is reminiscent of Arcadia; and it is indeed the intention of the owners to realise this idea by means of a number of scattered huts bearing Gessner's name and inscriptions. Not far from these huts, Geßner, the immortal singer of innocence and virtue, is to receive a monument."
